The Photography Show from a Hobbyist Perspective

I have always loved Photography for as long as I can remember. When I was about 11, I took a camera with me to Northumberland on a school trip. It was back in the days of film, long before digital made an appearance. I remember looking forward to seeing the photos of the birds I took on the Farne Islands. They never materialised though as the film fell out of the camera and got exposed. I was so disappointed. Then, after I left school, I attended the London College of Fashion. I was on the modelling course but was far more interested in the view from the camera and the set-ups than being in front of it! Now, of course, you rarely find me without a camera in my hands. It isn’t just part of my profession , it is my hobby too and I absolutely love it.

If you have even the slightest amount of passion for photography, or video for that matter, then I can highly recommend attending The Photography Show and the brand new Video Show, taking place at the NEC, in Birmingham from March 16^th to 19^th.

Last year, for 1 day, I got lost in photography and during that time, nothing else existed. The help and advice on offer is fantastic. I was desperate to stay for longer and take more in. I definitely felt that one day wasn’t enough. There was so much to see and listen to and learn. These are some of the reasons I will be there for two days this time, but I would be there for all four days if I had the chance.

The Leading Brands in Photography

One of the things I found fantastic about last year was all the help and advice on offer from all the leading camera brands. Canon, Nikon and Fujifilm not only have their stands where they can help and advise you on your kit, they are also hosting demos and workshops led by brand ambassadors throughout the show.

Last year, I took my Canon GX7 as I still don’t feel that I am making the most of it. I also have an issue with the video and am unsure how to fix it. I did speak to someone at the stand last year but I was very pushed for time. Knowing now what I knew then, I shall be bringing the camera with me again. As I have two days worth of time, I shall make a point of setting some time aside and getting some proper advice and assistance.

Even though I am a Canon person, I found that I could learn something from all of the brands, both at their stands and at their talks. I have no doubt this will be just as good in 2019.

The Great Outdoors

Over the past year, as I have found my feet running my photography business, I still turn to my camera for my downtime. Gone is the time when I would photograph absolutely anything. It all seems to have it’s own section these days. Weddings, Events, Family and Children photo shoots are all where I enjoy earning a living, however, give me the great outdoors for my me-time – which is even more precious when I have a toddler who takes up most of my hours!

I find nothing more relaxing than walking around a park or nature reserve looking for wildlife to photograph so I am very keen to listen to some of the tips, advice and stories that will be shared on The Great Outdoors Stage.

Passion

There are two animals I seem to photograph more than others; bees and birds. I don’t know why, but I seem to be drawn to them more than anything else. For me, birds are fascinating and can form many different shapes whether it be with their wings out or tucked into their sides. This is why I am keen to listen to Tesni Ward and her talk on Passion, which takes place on The Great Outdoors Stage on 17th March at 1.30pm. She will be explaining why it’s so important to work with the species of wildlife you connect with, regardless of how ‘common’ they are or how they are perceived by others. Definitely something which resonates with me.

It’s In the Air

The other medium of photography I would love to get to grips with is how to shoot skies properly – whether it be the sun, the night skies, stars or the moon. JasonPB will be giving a talk – ‘It’s In the Air’ – on this very subject. He will be explaining how earth’s atmosphere interacts with the environment, and how this will help with your photography. He will be giving two talks on The Great Outdoors Stage on this subject – one on 16th March at 1.30pm and the other on 17th March at 10.30am.

I find that there is always something new to learn with photography. After last year, I came away inspired and full of ideas and I have no doubt that my head will be just as jam-packed full of things I want to try after returning again this year.
