4 Great Reasons to Visit The Photography Show 2019
Back in March last year, just before I started my photography business, I ventured up to the NEC in Birmingham for The Photography Show. Prior to this, I found out that I had made it to the final 10 in the competition being run in conjunction with the show called ’60 Seconds to Change Your Life’. A very proud moment for me and one that definitely gave me a huge boost.
I was so determined to get to the show, I dug my car out of the snow in Somerset and travelled up to Birmingham and back in a day! It was my very first time at the show and I can’t tell you how pleased I was that I went. It helped in so many ways with the set-up of my business as well as helping my confidence.
This year, I am most definitely going again but this time with a different perspective and a new purpose. I am also very pleased to be going for 2 days instead of just the one. It will give me far more time to be able to get around all the stands as well as give me a bigger choice on the speakers.
The Photography Show takes place from 16th until 19th March at the NEC in Birmingham. There are tonnes of things to see, lots of suppliers to speak to and countless talks to attend. Here are just 4 great reasons to be there!

The Video Show
For the very first time, The Photography Show is incorporating The Video Show. With YouTube stars rising through the ranks and many youngsters considering video as a career choice, this news will suit any budding filmmakers, professional videographers, vloggers or online content creators. The event will offer filmmakers the opportunity to build on their knowledge of all aspects of moving image production and content creation from some of the best names in the industry.
The Exhibitors
Last time I found that I did not have enough time to get around all the exhibitors in less than a day. With the fact that I will be there for one whole day and much of another, I am really looking forward to taking a more relaxed approach in being able to visit all the stands that I want to see – and make sure I haven’t missed any by going back again on the second day. These include the major camera manufacturers; Canon, Nikon and Fuji, The Societies – of which I am a member, Digital Camera magazine – which I receive monthly, nPhoto, Elinchrome and many, many more!
Expert Talks
Not only did I find the talks at The Photography Show inspiring last year, but I also found much of what I learned extremely useful as I stepped into the early stages of my business. I still use the information I gleaned even now and refer to it if I ever need to. It seems that, once again, there is a wealth of information being imparted on many different subjects. These include:
- The Great Outdoors Stage: Covering landscape, wildlife and nature photography with tips on setting up dramatic time lapse, to the tech and skills needed for macro shots
- Super Stage: Giving insights into the lives and careers of photography greats and those at forefront of their profession
- Editing Suite: Sessions looking at basic retouching, adding effects, and what’s possible with the editing software out there across all skill levels
- Photo Live and Video Live Stages: Exciting practical demos focusing on a range of technical applications, from lighting and flash use, to shooting action including dance and sports
- Wedding & Portrait Stage: A variety of sessions from looking at how to tackle weather challenges on someone’s special day to capturing the essence of emotion in a family portrait
- In Motion and Behind the Lens Theatres: Discovering how to produce engaging photography and video content, refining technique and embracing creativity
The Masterclasses
There are a number of different paid-for sessions to check out from the masterclass and conference programmes covering photography and video; there’s something for beginners, pros and students.
Photography masterclasses for beginners include:
- Understanding exposure and choosing the right lens
- Introduction to editing
- Composing your photos
Video masterclasses for beginners include:
- An introduction to visual storytelling
- Amazing audio for total beginners
- Video editing 101
Pro masterclasses cover:
- How to overcome your creative block
- Colour – the key to emotion
- How travel photography can improve your profile
Also for pros, there are conference sessions such as one on professional pricing (something I am keen to understand better) as well as how to improve the quality of the jobs you get.
For students, conference sessions include one that looks at the reality of going pro in photography after University, and there’s also a talk on tips for starting a career in film and TV if you’re interested in the video perspective.
The masterclasses are all £10 for half a day, the pro conference sessions costs £10 for half a day or £15 for two half days and the student conference sessions are £5 for all 4 talks – bargain!
