A Review of the Do The Unthinkable Diet from Musclefood UK – Week 1

During my pregnancy I put on a lot of weight. It wasn’t just down to the added weight of a baby nor the water retention and swelling due to pre-eclampsia (although, that did have much to do with it). I also enjoyed eating whatever I wanted which, of course, included the other love of my life – chocolate. I had a bit of a thing for hot cross buns with butter too.

As you can imagine my weight increased and, at one stage, I am certain that I weighed around 240lbs. I am sure I went over that too.

After Christmas this year, I knew I needed to make a proper effort to lose the weight gain and get in shape. Ross had come out in sympathy with my pregnancy and also gained weight at the same time so we both knew that we needed to do something about it. Enter the Musclefood Diet.

Starting the diet

Before making the food choices on our plan, we were taken through a number of questions to help Musclefood see what we wanted to achieve and ensure that they directed us towards the correct food and plan for this.

Both Ross and I are looking to lose weight. We had to put in our age, height, weight and how active we were. This then took us through to what we would receive and the different plans available. For example, you could opt to receive 5 days worth of food with the weekend off, 6 days worth with one day off or the full 7 days.

Food includes, breakfast, lunch and dinner with 3 snacks for the periods in between breakfast and lunch and then another snack for the evening after dinner.

Your also receive a wall planner which includes a progress tracker, a DVD with all the workouts and the ability to join the Facebook support group.

The Food

On the whole the food is delicious. I haven’t really felt hungry during the whole of the first week. Ross has a little but managed to stave it off!

One of the reasons I have failed diets in the past is either because the food is disgusting or you are so limited to what you are allowed to eat (shakes and small packets of freeze dried food really aren’t for me!). With Musclefood you can eat things like chicken tikka masala, pizza and chocolate brownies. They prepare everything for you. Which means no food waste as well as perfectly portioned meals. Even better – they are ready in under 10 minutes.

Because you order weekly, you can start to look at ensuring you receive your favourites and cross off the items you are not so keen on.

Vicky

Likes – the chocolate peanut butter brownies, chocolate porridge, chicken tikka pizza, lasagne and the Chicken tikka masala stir fry curry kit.

Dislikes – chicken teryaki soup, chicken stroganoff

Ross

Likes – lasagne, chicken balti stir fry curry kit, persian lime chicken, strawberry & apple porridge, all the chocolate protein bars.

Dislikes – the apple and cinnamon porridge.

We have realised that the rice pot meals can be rather dry and are better at lunchtimes. We prefer the box or tray meals which come with a tray of meat and a tray of vegetables which are microwaved together are far better for an evening dinner as it feels like you are having more of a rounded meal, as well as the stir fry kits – which have a little more sauce to them and are less dry.

The Exercise

The exercise is hard. Very hard. When you are not a very mobile person and are pretty useless at things like circuits – such as squat thrusts and push-ups – then this is not going to be a walk in the park for you. I have struggled this past week and not really been able to keep up.

Steve, the personal trainer and nutrionist, who presents your fitness DVD is full of enthusiasm and you can see that the exercises are pretty easy for him. He has a number of other people completing the exercise routines with him and it is encouraging to see that they are real people who can’t all keep up. It does help you feel like you are not the only one!

We had an induction exercise which was a fitness test where we had to record our results and then we will compare them in 30 days time.

Here is what we achieved:

Since then we have had further exercise routines and I will go into more detail about those next week.

Our Results After the First Week

I have to admit that this first week hasn’t all been plain sailing – but what diet is?!

The food has been really easy. From the porridge for breakfast where you just add water, the snacks which you grab on the go, and the rice pots and tray meals which take just 4 minutes in the microwave, you hardly have to think for yourself and you are also limited on the washing up too! This, of course, means you have extra time to exercise.

The exercise hasn’t been so easy. The night after the induction class I nearly cancelled my Zumba class as I ached in places I couldn’t remember I had! But, I went and was glad I did. Doing the DVD in the hot weather is even harder!
