Prose for Thought – England.
Hello everyone, welcome to this weeks Prose for Thought. I have to say that the poetry has been a bit thin on the ground over the last couple of weeks but I know that creativity can never be forced and the beauty of writing poetry is more of a relaxation rather than a chore.
This was never more true for me than yesterday. Although it was chucking it down in rain as I drove the roads of Somerset putting out the posters for my driving school, I couldn’t help but notice just how beautiful this country is and, it Radio 2 and Ken Bruce couldn’t have timed it better when he celebrated St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday when he played the song ‘England’ by Ralph McTell. If you haven’t heard it before then please take a listen:
I love this country and I wanted to try and create a tribute to the beauty that we have here by writing a poem. The words don’t seem to do it justice though!
England
As I walk these paths so well trod
I think of how lucky I am
The villager turns with a smile and a nod
I eat scones with strawberry jam
For England is a country so full to behold
Of history from ages past
Who knows what stories there are to be told
Among that all that green green grass
Tales of armour and battles and knights
Of Kings and Queens from old
The stories of Shakespeare and other playwrites
Sit on bookshelves of those young and old
Cottages, thatched, and bridges and streams
Cities with buildings so old
Cups of tea and clotted ice creams
We complain if its hot or its cold!
Proud to be English, that’s what I am
It’s heritage and all that it is
I do love it so, this green pleasant land
Not seen it? Then don’t go amiss!

It’s lovely to read a positive poem about our wonderful country. We brits do criticise it a lot! I often hear people saying they want to leave for foreign (usually hotter!) climes but I think we’re so lucky, I mean, what ON EARTH would we talk about in queues if we didn’t have such crazy weather?! Your poem captures all that is good about our lovely home.

What a lovely English poem – love the emphasis on scones, jam and clotted cream! This conjures up lovely images of England in summertime – all green and afternoon teas! x

What a fantastic tribute to your lovely country Vicky. I love this. You are a great patriot. What a lovely lovely poem too. Makes me think that I dont’ give England enough credit for many great things. I need to start loving it more. Its hard not being my homeland so I think I try to keep a tunnel vision as I don’t want to feel like a trader to my own roots but you are right and this has motivated me to love the country that is a HUGE part of both of my children. I need to rewire my brain. Thank you for sharing this and helping me get there.
