Go West
This week’s word over on The Prompt, Sara has chosen the word ‘Go’. I have decided that my poetry has become somewhat serious of late so I needed an excuse to write something a little more light-hearted and, who better to choose than my favourite group, Go West, who celebrated their 30th anniversary last year.
Regular readers will know that I have met both Peter and Richard on a few occasions now. They are lovely guys, really easy to speak to and always up for a laugh. When I last met them, back in August at the Rewind Festival South, I was able to get some photographs of them and I have included a few on this post. I was also finally able to tell them that Grace had been born to their music and, the song in particular, ‘Never Let Them See You Sweat’ taken from the soundtrack of the film ‘White Men Can’t Jump’. Richard rightly said that it was all part of the big patchwork of life – and they have featured in quite a bit of that with me. I have tried to capture at least some of this in my poem this week.
Go West
Way back in 1985
A group came on the scene
From that point they’ve been to me
The best there’s ever been
With 30 years under their belts
They have longevity
They may not be everyone’s taste
But they’re my favourite recipe!
They’ve been part of my life
In oh so many ways
They’ve seen me through the happy times
And through my darkest days
They were there at my first love
They were there when I was in labour
They were my first ever concert
Their music woke my neighbours
Peter Cox has a voice
That is powerful and strong
He writes such meaningful lyrics
To any given song
Richard Drummie’s a talent
He’s trekked for charity
Guitarist, producer, composer
A man of great dexterity
So who is this group I speak of
That are my favourite and my best?
They’re the Kings of Wishful Thinking
The ones they call ‘Go West’
