North Somerset Bird of Prey Experience

As the Easter Holidays come to an end, I can safely say that we have had an eventful couple of weeks. With Rex being poorly at the beginning – and thankfully getting better as the week progressed – Grace and I headed off to the North Somerset Bird of Prey Centre the day before Good Friday. This was to have an hour and a half experience followed by a cream tea. This was a gift to Grace for her birthday back in January and a great opportunity for she and I to have some Mother/Daughter time together. She loves animals and wildlife – and I had a feeling she would enjoy it.

There were 10 of us in the group and our handler, Ally, was very knowledgeable and personable and I really enjoyed listening to her explanations of each bird and details about them and how they lived in the wild.

We held Luna, a White Faced Owl (Grace’s favourite), Inca, a Barn Owl, Maleficient, a falcon, Flash, a Harrier Hawk and Calypso, a Siberian Eagle Owl.

 

They only have 6 Open Days a year which is for all members of the public and have a mixture of other animals as well as birds of prey, including racoons, reptiles, ferrets, skunks and red foxes. We booked our private experience through a Groupon voucher and, judging by Grace’s reaction (telling us that it was definitely her favourite birthday present) we will be back. Grace has expressed an interest in their hunting day where you have the opportunity to take a Harrier Hawk into the woods – however, she is going to have to wait a few years for that one. You need to be over 16!

Afterwards we had a cream tea at Heathers Coffee Shop. The perfect end to a great half day out.
