8 Yummy Tropical Jams For Creative Kids
*Remunerated Post*

One of the things we have increased since lockdown is our love of baking and cooking (mainly Slimming World friendly, of course!). Grace is very much a self-starter when it comes to making things in the kitchen and often pops her head round the door to ask if she can bake something. One of the things we have started to look at is making our own tropical jam.
What is important for us is that we have our fruit intake. Thankfully we receive a weekly delivery to ensure that we are getting our 5 a day but there are times when the fruit starts to get a bit past it so, when that happens, we start to find another use for it. The best way is in a preserve and there are plenty of recipe books out there from The Works, who offer a broad variety of discount baking books.
There are, of course, lots of less common fruits. These tend to be more exotic and are flavours you only find on holiday or a trip abroad. If only local supermarkets would sell them! BUT jam is so easy to make yourself and here are some great fruits to make some alternative jam flavours.
Table of Contents
Peach

Peaches have to be one of my favourite summer fruits and this jam from Gin Fuelled Bluestocking looks and sounds amazing! Peaches and Bourbon – what’s not to love?!
Grapefruit

I have to admit that grapefruits aren’t my favourite thing but it does remind me of breakfast at my grandma’s. However, she never used them in a jam and I never thought that it was a ‘thing’. Nor did Seasons and Suppers until her daughter suggested it and she has a great recipe over on her blog.
Pineapple

I usually find pineapples a little tricky to chop until they are perfectly ripe! This Spiced Pineapple Jam With Patron Tequila recipe from Gin Fuelled Bluestocking looks outstanding! And, it goes great with savoury food too.
Guava

Apparently, guava ripens one fruit at a time, so you need to make sure that you keep an eye on them. Thankfully, preserving them in a jam will keep them going that much longer and you can find a recipe for this over with Garlic and Zest.
Watermelon

The more I think about Watermelon jam, the more I want to try it! This one looks utterly amazing from Melanie Cooks and, as she claims it is the easiest one on the Internet, I shall definitely be trying it.
Passion Fruit

Did you know that, in the 13th century, the word ” jam ” referred to food cooked in honey or sugar? It meant that fragile fruits were able to be kept through sugar preservation and that’s where the other name for jam “preserves” comes from. Thanks to Smart Sexy Paleo for that piece of information over on her fantastic Passion Fruit jam recipe.
Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe is definitely my most favourite of all the melon varieties and I absolutely love the sound (and look) of this Salted Honey Cantaloupe jam from Bon Appetit.
Pomelo

I have to admit to not knowing enough about Pomelos. They are in fact the largest of all the citrus fruits and are closely related to grapefruits. They can look a bit intimidating due to their size but this shouldn’t put you off! Jam recipes aren’t so easy to come by for them – so perhaps I will have to make my own?! But I did love the look of this marmalade recipe from Food on Fifth – especially made for Paddington!
