A Review of the Gtech AirRam AR20
A couple of years back, we were sent the Gtech AirRam K9. At the time I waxed lyrical about it because I was thoroughly impressed – we all were – so I knew that the new model had a lot to live up to. I am always a bit dubious when a company brings out a new model. I wonder whether it is to try and make more money or to improve on the item. So, what do we think of the new one?
What has changed?
Like it’s predecessor, the new AirRam is still cordless (which I love!) and has an easily manoeuvrable handle and head, however, what I really like is the new filter system. The K9 was more of a ‘carpet sweeper’ style in the fact that you just had a front panel to remove and empty the dust and dirt. On the AR20 then is a removable bin which not only makes it easier to empty but also causes less mess when you are trying to empty it. By simply holding the AirRam’s bin over your rubbish bin, you push a lever to release the dirt. Unlike the previous model, the AR20 also has a filter system which you can wash and clean on a regular basis.
One of the major issues I experienced on the previous model was the amount of hair which got stuck in the brush. Eventually, I think it played havoc with the machine and meant we needed a new battery. On the AR20 you have the benefit of being able to remove the brush bar and clean it properly. There is a groove in the bar which you can run an open pair of scissors down in order to easily remove the hair.
The battery on the new model is much more easily accessible and you can either leave it on the machine or remove it in order to re-charge. Plus, it now has a headlight – making it easy to see into the darker corners.
What I love about the AR20
I am much happier with the emptying and cleaning of the new model. It means that I am able to see when the machine is full and needs emptying – previously you had to use a bit of guess work! I love the fact that I am able to remove the brush and give that a proper clean and I also like the adjustable handle which makes it easier for the whole family to use. It also reaches the corners easier and picks up better.
Anything I don’t like?
The only thing I am not sure of is the placement of the new power switch. Previously it was on the handle but now it is a big, obvious button on the cleaning head which does make it a little tricky when you want to place you foot on the head to angle it.
How do the K9 and the AR20 compare?
As I said at the beginning of my post, the new AR20 had a lot to live up to but I am pleased to say that it makes the grade! I have to say that I find it far more effective on the carpeted areas of our house than the K9 and I love the fact that I can see when it needs emptying. It now means we have the K9 model for the hard floors and the AR20 for the carpets.
