Withal Poetry – Day 6 of National Poetry Writing Month #NaPoWriMo
My sixth poem for National Poetry Writing Month is Withal Poetry. With many thanks to Joan Bakewell and her beautiful essay ‘What Makes Us Human’ on today’s Jeremy Vine Show for the inspiration.
Withal Poetry
Language has so many uses
But none such as that in verse
Withal Poetry
It answers our needs
With an intensity
That stands
Alone
On the page
Language can explain, complain
Shouts, sings, instructs, lists
Withal Poetry
Is an illumination
Highlighting
Your thoughts
And
Your feelings
Language is rich and beautiful
And comes in so many forms
Withal Poetry
It is central
Bringing subjects
To life
And
Life to subjects
Language can be hard
Expressed in its fullest form
Withal Poetry
Has an intensity
There is no impulse
That cannot be
caught
by the words of a poem
Language is a body of words
By means of communication
Withal Poetry
In times of crisis
For birth, death, love and loss
Lifting or comforting
Your day
And possibly
Your life

I love the English language and the ways in which words, chosen with care, can really express our feelings and move us. Lovely poem Vicky. X
Thank you so much Sam xx

Thank you so much Tracey, what a really wonderful thing to say xx
I like the visual layout of this one, which I realise sounds a bit odd, but language is all sorts of things including pretty sometimes.
That doesn’t sound odd at all – I like it too 🙂 And you are so very right xx
Beautiful poem, Victoria. I loooove how you explored the many facets and purpose of language & poetry. I would have to agree with everyone and praise the flow you created it here. It’s so smooth and definitely creates an elegant tone to your piece. Thanks so much for sharing this with us and for hosting #prose4t this week. Have a lovely Thursday 🙂
Thank you so much Maria, I am so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for linking – you have a great day too xx
