A Review of the Baby Aromatherapy Course with Somerset Therapies

Back in September, I signed Rex and I up for a Baby Massage course with Somerset Therapies, which was held here in Crewkerne. Rex was transfixed with Becky, who ran the course! The massage course has served me well and I learned a lot so when Becky said that she was also running a Baby Aromatherapy course, I knew we needed to sign up.

About Baby Aromatherapy – or Aromababy – courses

The course which Becky runs enables you to learn all about aromatherapy for babies and small children. Whilst adults are generally fine with essential oils, infants are a different matter. They are limited in what is safe for them. Incorporating the baby massage which we had already learned, Becky showed us how the oils could benefit our babies. She showed us how to safely dilute the oils. We learned which bases oils and butters were safe and how to mix them with the oil.

What does the course include?

The course includes use of all essential oils, base oils and butters and mats are provided. On top of that, the location where we experienced our course meant that Becky was able to provide us with tea and coffee (and she catered for my dairy-free diet!) together with biscuits. She also had a diffuser running each week so, when we entered the room, it smelt wonderful! At the end you also receive a certificate of completion.

How long does it run for?

The course runs for 4 weeks and she currently holds it at Oaklands School in Yeovil. The price of £42 for the course is really reasonable – especially when you consider the fact that you have access to the oils and bases. The course is 45 minutes each week but we tended to run over a bit as we all had a good natter!

Our experience of Baby Aromatherapy

Rex and I really enjoyed every moment of our class. It was held on a Tuesday morning and, even when I was feeling really low, it helped. There were 3 of us taking the class and our babies were all of a similar age.  As I said above, we had already experienced the baby massage class – but it didn’t matter if we hadn’t of done it already. Becky explained each technique again for us but, this time, incorporating the massage oils.

The first week we did a patch test on the arms of our babies to ensure that each oil was safe and that they didn’t have a reaction. We were introduced to different types of base oils and butters and I have to say that aloe butter was our favourite. It melted really easily and stayed lubricated. We much preferred it to the grapeseed oil which we had been using in the massage class. We also used coconut oil as a base – and this was really useful as it is readily available in our house!

The Benefits

The main benefit I think I have taken from the class is knowing which oil helps different symptoms in our babies. We were able to learn that Chamomile helps with teething, relaxation and hyperactivity. Lavender is great for sleep, eczema and nappy rash. There were also oils for insomnia, digestion (which we have used!) and restlessness as well as tummy pains, poor appetite and anti-inflammatory. There was an oil called Fragonia which I had never heard of before.

Rex and I can highly recommend this course. We have been able to continue using what we have learned in the comfort of our own home. I now have a diffuser and, when Rex had a bad cold recently, it came in really handy. He has also had tummy problems so sweet orange oil was also a great help.

Massive thanks to Becky who gave us a complimentary course in return for our review. If you live in the Somerset area then take a look at the Somerset Therapies Facebook page. There you will find details of all Becky’s courses. She also offers massage therapy in your own home which has really helped – especially as I haven’t had to find child care!
