Prose for Thought – Limericks

I have decided to try something different this week. I am currently reading ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl to Grace and this is her second time around – although Grace is much older now and I find that she understands it better and is enjoying it in a different way to the last time around. There is a chapter where we meet Miss Honey who asks Matilda about poetry and limericks and, on the spot, Matilda makes one up. Miss Honey congratulates her and tells her that these are very hard to write, so I thought I would set myself a challenge and write one about each of us! I got so carried away I actually wrote 4 in the end – I’d love to know what you think.
There was a young lady from Bow
Who sure had a long way to go
She took out some loot
But just got one boot
Which saw her through rain, sleet and snow
GRACE
There once was a young girl called Grace
Who travelled all over the place
Sometimes she rode
And sometimes she strode
And sometimes fell flat on her face!
ROSS
There once was a gentleman called Ross
Who was obsessed with wanting to floss
It was all fine and dandy
Til one day he used candy
And the sugar showed his teeth who was boss
VIC
There once was a woman called Vic
Whose hair was incredibly thick
She brushed it so hard
Whilst reciting the bard
Of Shakespeare plays she had her pick

These are so good, I love limericks we write them often for fun. How nice to be reading Matilda, though he loves the film my son hates Roald Dahl books. I once found ‘The Twits’ hidden at the back of the shoe cupboard. : )
There once was a poet called Vicky
Who found writing limericks tricky
Her lines one to four
Were to good to ignore
But she often came unstuck on the last one… 🙂
I did an OU course several years ago and the poetry module included Limericks as a ‘warm up’ exercise. Great fun! 🙂
Oh – and reading your Grace limerick, I just remembered this, written for the son (Dominic) of a friend after a long walk in the park…
A resourceful young fellow named Domi
Went walking one day with his Mommy
When his legs got too weak
Did he cry? Not a squeak!
He just slithered along on his tummy! 😀
I am really looking forward to my girls being old enough for Roald Dahl. His books are fantastic. I’ve never written a limerick but might give them a go having read yours. Fab.

Love the limericks. Have made up a few in my time but sadly never wrote them down! I’m inspired to have another try now though! Great fun.
I love Matilda too! And these limericks are really fun. I enjoy writing them too but always find that although they seem simple they are actually quite tricky. I love the image of flossing with candy!

Limericks are so much fun!! They are fab, but think Grace’s is my fave!! Roald Dahl is one of my heroes!!
Love your limericks. They are hard to write for sure. And I was obsessed with Matilda when I was growing up. Can’t wait to read it to my kids when they are older.
I love limericks. I wrote one for a National Poetry Day/Twitter’s anniversary last year! I was (still am) a huge Spike Milligan fan when I was a child who wrote some brilliant limericky style stuff.
I think I like Grace’s one best! Very typical of children and the antithesis of her beautiful name!
I love Roald Dhal, so does my wee boy. Matilda is the best, I would love to she the musical one day. These are lots of fun. I have never tried to write one myself, I may have to give it a go.
