Prose for Thought – When Did You Get So Big?

Welcome one and all to this week’s Prose for the Thought, the linky for all your original creativity for poetry and prose. Thank you so much to all the linkers from last week – I am STILL getting round to you all! I will get there, I promise.

This week I have really noticed just how big Grace is getting and how much she is growing up. She is starting to talk about ‘annoying boys’ and say such grown up things that all of I sudden, I’ve blinked and the baby has disappeared! In it’s place is this young lady whose features are starting to change from that of a little girl to a young girl instead. This is what has inspired my poem this week.

When Did You Get So Big

I watch you as you grow and flourish
And sometimes you have too much courage
Taking risks that are out of my power
I guess I’m losing control by the hour
Tell me, when did you get so big?

Time passes by in the blink of an eye
I look at you and I smile and sigh
The grown up chat is starting to come
But I still want to be your number one
Tell me, when did you get so big

It’s bath time when I notice it most
When I hold your head and look at you close
Your face is changing and growing so
But I just don’t want to let you go
Tell me, when did you get so big?

Holding fast onto all of those years
I still want to be the one to quash the fears
Big brave girl when you’re feeling bolder
There’ll still be cuddles from me when you’re older
Tell me, when did you get so big

So, please someone slow the hands of time
I want this girl to always be mine
To always need me to be there and guide
And always be there to walk by her side
Tell me, when did you get so big

  1. Ah I can relate to this. ‘Taking risks that are out of my power’ – that struck a chord with me, my boy is growing so independent, I’d swear it was only yesterday he lay in a cot. Where or where do the years go? x

  2. My eldest daughter turned 9 this week – SO grown up! Like you say, where does the time go? Goes in a flash….

  3. As a mother your poem rings so true to me.

    1. Great to see you on here Pooky! Hope you decide to join in too – your poems deserve a wider audience x

    2. I was going to tell you which part of this I like the best, but then I read it through again and realised I love it all! Every word is so true and so heartbreaking in its accuracy. Feels like my Little Chap is slipping away faster every day 🙁

  4. Blimey Victoria, next time I need a good cry I’ll just read your poem again! It is wonderful, so true, so heartbreaking, but so amazing to see them change and grow up at the same time. I tell my two to stop growing and that they will always be mummy’s ‘babies’ they just laugh, and I just hug them tighter…

I have added a poem this week written by an inspirational Twitter friend called Marion. Her story is an incredible one, I won’t spoil the ending but read her poem via the ‘Stay Calm and Content’ linky above.

    With love, Cat x

  5. I feel this way about my boys! My oldest is six and I can’t believe how grown up he’s getting, so I cherish the time I have with my youngest while he is still a baby. A very emotional poem – lovely.

  6. This is a really great piece. I have 3 daughters; 1, 9 & 14. Our 9 yr old is just going through that stage of one minute wanting the hold our hands and be our baby girl to the next, getting embarrassed at the slightest thing her mum and I do. I know they will all get older and create their own lives and have their own familys but to me, all three will still be my little girls who sat on their daddy’s knee and cuddled him tight. x

  7. Ohh that is fabulous, I want time to slow as well, my girls are getting so bold now, which is one way is fabulous, but…. Mich x

  8. They grow so fast it is true. I get a fright when I look at baby pictures, I can hardly remember what it was like when they were so small.

  9. Sometimes it is so hard to accept that our children are growing and there is nothing we can do to make stop, just for a wee while 😉 Very well expressed x

  10. ‘But I just don’t want to let you go’ very emotive Vicky, this line stirred me. The poem here is one of my favourites of yours x
