It can be difficult to keep the kids entertained in winter as temperatures drop and outdoor play becomes less and less frequent. Craft projects offer the ideal activity to keep kids entertained indoors over winter with plenty of seasonal things to make, draw, colour, and glue.

Pine Cone Snow Owls

Pine cone snow owls not only look utterly adorable but are also incredibly fun and easy to make, even for younger children. The materials you’ll need to create your own snowy owls are pine cones, cotton balls, orange felt, wiggly eyes, glue, and scissors. The first step is to tear up the cotton balls into little tufts. Then, simply stuff them between the pine cone scales to create a feather-like look. Once the pine cone owl is looking suitably fluffy, stick on a pair of eyes and cut out a small triangle of orange felt to stick on as a beak.

Snow Painting

This winter, use your back garden as a canvas by mixing up some colourful snow paints and letting the kids paint in a fun and imaginative way. All you need to help kids turn a snow-covered garden into a work of art is some spray bottles, food colouring and water. Once you have mixed together the water and food dye in the bottles to create your snow paint, all that is left is to get outdoors and to start painting using the spray nozzle.

Ice Bubbles

Part craft and part science experiment, ice bubbles are a great way to bundle up warm and enjoy some time outside. Quite possibly the easiest of winter crafts, all you need to create ice bubbles is some washing up liquid and water to create your bubble mix, along with a few straws. Once the temperature drops below freezing, you can blow bubbles in a bowl or onto a surface, then watching as they freeze over and burst.

Paper Winter Hats

This easy winter craft idea is not only simple but also requires minimal clean up afterwards making it one that kids and grownups will both enjoy. To create your own colourful winter hats, all you need is some simple hat templates draw out on good quality white paper, colouring tools, cotton balls, a glue stick or PVA glue, and scissors. Encourage kids to colour in the hat first – for this craft project it doesn’t matter if they colour outside of the lines as you will be cutting out the hat later. Once the hat is looking suitably colourful, it can be cut out by either the children or a helpful adult. Then, all that is left to do is to glue on a cotton ball as pompom on top of the hat and add a row of cotton balls along the bottom edge of the hat.

Snow Slime

Slime has been a big hit with kids in the past few years and they seem to love both playing with it and making it. To give this fun sensory play activity a festive twist, why not make some snow slime? All you need to make some slime of your own is some liquid starch and PVA glue. For your festive twist, add some glittery artificial snow – like the one used for Christmas crafts. If you want to create a more colourful festive slime, then you can add some coloured glitter or snowflake confetti.
