Does Your Back Pain Trail Lead Right Back To Your Mattress?

Most professionals will tell you that our sedentary lifestyles are to blame. After all, the majority of us spend upwards of four hours at our desks nowadays. For office workers, that figure is even higher. But, we’re not here to look at ergonomic chairs and sitting positions. In reality, even non-office workers often complain of back woes. And, by putting our detective hat on, we reckon the culprit is the bed, in the bedroom, with the rogue spring.

We know what you’re thinking. Your bed helps you to relax. It lures you into security and eases your back more than anything. It’s such a relief to lie down that you sometimes breathe an audible sigh of relief. How, then, could your mattress be the criminal here?

In reality, there are a few different reasons. Everything from the material  to the age of your mattress could see it double-crossing you on the back front. If you’re still in doubt, read on to find out a few sure signs your mattress needs locking up. Or, you know, replacing…

The curse of old age

Old age alone should be enough to point the finger of suspicion in your mattresses direction. The wearing down of materials over time can lead to exposed springs or lack of support. And, these are both prime culprits for back cricks. As a general rule, you should aim to replace your mattress around every eight years. If you haven’t done so, we think this is case closed from the first piece of evidence.

Insomnia issues

Are you struggling with insomnia? Do you have back, neck or joint aches? Is it hard to concentrate or remember things? If so, the root of the problem may be your mattress. It is a good idea to shop around to find the right one for you.

Of course, there are so many other factors why you might be not sleeping or waking up extra early. Take a look at the post ‘The enigma of early morning awakenings‘ from the lovely people at Simba who share many symptoms and details on how you might be able to fix them.

You toss and turn to avoid the pain

Many of us make the mistake of thinking it’s normal to toss and turn to ease back pain. In reality, though, the very process of doing this can jolt your back and do damage. What’s more, your need to turn often in the night is a sign your mattress is playing you up. It may be, for instance, that a stray spring is digging you at just the wrong point. Over extended periods, that can cause real back issues. Think, then, about how often you wake during the night.

Sore in the morning

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that waking up with a sore back is a sign of night-time foul play. Still, many of us fail to make the connection. This becomes even harder to diagnose given that many of us then sit at a desk and exasperate things. But, waking up with any severe pain or stiffness is a sure sign your mattress isn’t offering the support you need. Even those with back problems should wake up feeling rested. If that isn’t the case for you, it’s time to get rid of the mole in you ranks!
