5 Tips to Unblock your Kitchen Sink

*Remunerated Post*

I feel sure that, like me, you must have experienced the issue of water not draining from your kitchen sink while you are doing dishes. This is one of the most common and irritating kitchen problems in every household. The stoppage in water draining is not because of anything clogged in the opening, even if it is, it’s a temporary fix. The draining only gets slower with your activities.

With a blocked sink, how do you maintain a healthy kitchen environment? How do you find the best way to unclog a sink and make your clean-up quicker and more intense? Many plumbers have confirmed that clogged kitchen sinks are now one of the major issues in every household. But, how can you fix it without spending a fortune? Here are some of the top tips to unblock your sink and make drainage smooth.

Use Boiling Water

When grease, hair, soap residue, or even smaller debris gets collected in your sink and blocks the pipe, it is time to loosen the blockage. This can be an easy fix using a kettle full of boiling water. Wondering what the process would be? Here is how you do it:

  • Use half a gallon of hot water.
  • Pour this heated water directly over the pipe or into the drain’s opening.
  • Turn on the taps, and check if the water drains out properly. If it’s still slow or blocked, repeat the process.

Check Rubbish Disposal

A rubbish disposal system can be the main culprit for your drainage problems. If the clog is due to the disposal, you can simply turn it on, and the blockage will break. Dysfunctional or overheated disposals may not turn on, but you can always activate the reset switch present at the bottom or the side of the unit. This helps for an easy reboot. Once you have reset the disposal, turn it on again, and this should clear the clog.

Plunge the Blockage

If all else fails and you see that there is no issue with the disposal system then it is time to bring in the plunger. You will need to use the plunger very carefully. Use a flat-bottomed one for an adequate job. Follow these steps to remove the blockage:

  • Fill the sink halfway with boiling water and make a seal around the drain.
  • The plunger should be positioned over the drain. Start pumping over the drain, up and down several times.
  • Remove the plunger after this process and check if the water is draining.
  • Repeat the process and then continue until the water drains.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

This is a natural substitute for chemical cleaners.  Here’s how to use them as an unblocker.

  • Eliminate standing water from your sink.
  • Pour a cup of baking soda over the drain, and use a spatula to push it through the pipe.
  • Pour a cup of vinegar through the drain opening.
  • Seal the opening with a cover or place a stopper.
  • Allow it to settle for 15 minutes.
  • Use boiling water to clear out the intense clogs.

Final Words

Drainage problems, clogged drains, and irritating sink blocks during the times of doing dishes are one of the most common topics discussed by households today. Thankfully, these problems are manageable. They are one of the easiest home repairs you can do alone. All you need to do is follow specific ways and get your drainage pipe cleared.
