Starting Beginners Zumba with In It Together South Somerset
When I mentioned to a couple of people that I was looking to start Zumba at the end of January, I was told that I was ‘brave’ and that it was difficult and very energetic. I was a little concerned as I hadn’t exercised properly since before I became pregnant with Rex and, even then, that wasn’t much!
In my last post I told you all about the In It Together initiative. In this post, I explain more about Beginners Zumba and how I got on with the course.

What is Zumba?
Zumba is an exercise class which combines dance and aerobic moves to energetic music. The choreography involves movements from salsa, samba, mambo and hip hop and actually feels more like you are having a dance party than exercising – which suits me far me. I used to have a great time dancing at clubs when I was younger so it kind of feels like I am reliving my youth!
The upbeat music which Sarah plays is extremely listenable and has found it’s way onto my play list. You don’t have to keep stopping and starting to learn the moves. Sarah puts the dance numbers together and then you simply follow along with her. You don’t need to be a great dancer to feel welcome in her Zumba class.
What is the Beginners Zumba class like?
I have to say that despite the fact that I felt apprehensive about walking in, every one there was in exactly the same situation as me. They were starting an exercise class. I was worried I would feel self-conscious, but I am pleased to say that I didn’t.
Not only are the classes fun but it is also my chance to get out of the house on a regular basis and have some time to myself. Each class is £3 and is set at 45 minutes. I know that when Sarah, the instructor, has enough students, she will start another Zumba class for the people who are no longer beginners and want to continue with this form of exercise.
How do I feel Beginners Zumba has helped me?
Zumba hasn’t just helped me get out of the house on my own. It came along at a time when I really needed something else to keep me going. I needed to get back to me and I needed to get my sanity back. Zumba has also helped my fitness levels. I was very sluggish and finding it hard to move when I first started Zumba now, combined with the walking I do, I am gradually starting to find it easier. It has taken a while and I feel like I still have a bit of way to go but this class has given me the kick up the bum I need!
Finishing the first course of Zumba
The first week of this Zumba class saw quite a few ladies start. I would say that around 15 of us saw the course through from beginning to end. On completion we all received a certificate showing that we had passed.

A new class started last week with some brand new ladies joining. The people who completed the course the last time are returning this Wednesday and I am really looking forward to it.
Will I be doing any other classes with In It Together?
Aside from restarting the Zumba – which I intend to keep going with for as long as I can – I shall also be joining a brand new walking class which starts this Thursday morning at 9.30am in Yeovil. I have already checked that it is pushchair-friendly so, not only will I be doing some exercise, but Rex will be getting some fresh air too. Plus, as an added bonus, it is free!
There are plenty of different classes available in many areas of South Somerset including Chard, Yeovil, Crewkerne, Wincanton with different types of exercise including Zumba, power hoops, walking, fitsteps dance, running and squats with tots for those with children. To find out more about all the beginners exercise that is available nip over to the In It Together Facebook page. They are very responsive and are happy to answer any questions you might have.
