A Song for the Weekend #34 – Breathing Underwater by Emeli Sande

Every so often a song comes along which has a mass of meanings in it. It also tends to be a totally beautiful song and – I make no apologies for sounding a bit silly when I say this – one that I keep listening to because it brings out so many different emotions in me. I think I have listened to Emeli Sandé’s new single ‘Breathing Underwater’ at least twice a day, every day this week.

I love a song that builds, and this does this beautifully with it’s gospel undertones followed by gospel solo at the end. It has been described as a ‘majestic anthem’ and I wholeheartedly agree. Emeli has always been on my radar since the beginning of my relationship with Ross. I always said that her song ‘Next to Me’ was written for someone like him – and that still holds true to this day.

If you are looking for an emotional-fuelled song which will elevate you this weekend, then you can do no wrong with this.

  1. I’m sorry but this modern way of “singing” or should I say warbling really gets on my wires. Why you have to go up and down the scales three times rather than singing one note really perplexes me. It just puts me off the song and lyrics straight away I’m afraid…..

    1. It’s a shame you feel that way William – I think that there are far worse singers out there, who can’t even hold a note properly, let alone ‘warble’.
