#NewThings Challenge – Playing a New Game.
As you may recall from last week’s post, we are taking part in this month’s CSMA #NewThings challenge to try lots of new things. Our first challenge last week was to visit a new place and this week it’s all about playing a new game.
Now, one thing that I am totally guilty of is getting new things and then putting them in a cupboard and not really using them until we have a clear-out. So this was a welcome challenge for us when I realised that there was a game in our cupboard that had been there for just over a year!
Blurt is a great word game that I got for Ross last year and one that we could use either at home or on the move (as it doubles up as a travel game). There are magnetic counters which fix to a scoreboard that cleverly doubles up as the lid to the tin which holds the game. The object of the game is to guess the word from the description given and Grace is just at the age where she is starting to be able to play things like this without looking confused! There are is a difficult side and an easy side and you can tell the two apart not only by the words, but by the fact that the easy ones are starred. It is even easy to use the card drawer as it tells you which side to draw from and which side to discard once you have played the card.
Grace and I took it in turns and, to be fair, I took the hard side and she took the easy and all words are scored by 1, 2 or 3 points depending on the word you are describing.
As the game progressed, I was getting more and more concerned that I was rather behind…until I suddenly realised that Grace had 3 points to go for the win and her next question was a three pointer….and….she got it right! I was really pleased that she had won whilst feeling slightly gutted that I had lost to a 7 year old! 😉
I have to say that I think that this game is both fun and educational and Grace really enjoyed it. I can see this one being a regular as she gets older.
If you need any inspiration then why not look in your cupboard?! I love good old fashioned games like this that don’t require a phone or tablet! I’m currently addicted to Bananagrams but this does look like a lot of fun #PoCoLo
I used to love playing games like this , I am looking forward to the girls being old enough to play games like this. The eldest can just about understand the rules to Guess Who so we’ve been playing that a lot.#pocolo
Oh I cannot wait until the kids can play games like this with us – although we may need to tone down our competitive streaks… I can remember my mum teaching my brother and I to play bridge (she’s an avid player and has played for years) and we beat her. Lovely stuff x #PoCoLo

I always lose games to my daughters who somehow manage to win every game we ever play. Sounds as though you have to get used to losing to your daughter too! Good luck next time lovely x
I’ve not come across that game before. I’m so competitive I’m going to hate losing to N when he’s old enough to play proper games. The OH thinks you should let children win – he used to tell me off playing with the nephews for going all out to win! Oops #newthings
Thanks for the comment Emma 🙂 I know – I am the same with Grace but thankfully Ross and I don’t just let Grace win and never have. She needs to try! I think that is a better example to set personally x
