We were gifted pairs from the different ranges of Modibodi in return for this review.
When I approached my early teens I dreaded getting my period. I shall never forget the discomfort of sanitary towels and the worry about leakage. Thanks to period pants, things have changed.
Grace won’t have to put up with the same concerns that I have. This is because of the fantastic Modibodi RED eco-friendly period-proof underwear.

About RED and Modibodi
RED is a new brand range for 8-16 year old girls to help them manage their periods in more sustainable way. They are brought to the market by Modibodi™ the modern, sanitary ware knickers.
These period pants have been created to give all bodies more confidence and comfort, and a more sustainable solution to disposable hygiene. On top of all that they are fashionable and come in some really eye-catching designs. You still need to stay on trend even if it is your underwear which very few see!
For almost two years Founder and CEO, Kristy Chong, spent her time designing, developing, and testing her patented Modifier Technology™ leak-proof undies into the Modibodi and RED collections. RED believes that making a positive impact should be as easy as changing the pants we wear – and now they include swimwear in that too.

The Eco-Friendly Bit
Did you know that it takes roughly 500 years for a sanitary pad to decompose in a landfill! That is just ONE. In the UK we flush around 2 billion tampons down the toilet every year – and goodness only knows how many sanitary towels we throw away!
If all women started to use period pants, just think how much we would help our planet.
Our Experience
I am pretty much done with periods now. But, I will never forget the embarrassment it brought.
I can recall the concern for the potential of leakage, especially at school. I wore a light grey skirt so any leaks showed up as a dark patch a mile away! I would either walk around trying to twist my head around over my shoulder to check the back of my skirt or I would ask one of my best friends to check for me and let me know if I was leaking (thank goodness for friends I could speak to like this!).
I now have great hopes for Grace that she will not have to suffer the same embarrassment.
The main concerns we had were:
Do they leak?
The great thing is that they are made to contain 1 – 2 tampons worth of liquid. There was definitely no leakage – and no checking over the shoulder here!
Do you need to change them during the day?
Our initial concern was that you would have to take a spare pair around with you. You don’t. In the time we have tested these, there has been no need for a spare pair once. Wear one pair during the day and then a fresh pair at night – no leakage!
Are they comfortable?
They do feel a bit thicker than your usual pair of pants – and they are great quality too (as you would expect really). The main difference is a much thicker lining inside the gusset.
How well do they wash?
It is best to rinse the pants after use before putting them in the wash. I am pleased to say that they wash well on a cold programme and it is best to dry them on the line to protect their protection (if you get what I mean!).
Are they expensive?
These pants really are a prime case for ‘you get what you pay for’.
A pair of Modibodi RED period pants cost £19.50 or, you can purchase a bundle of 7 pairs for £123. That works out at just over £17.50 each.
Considering a box of tampons or sanitary towels costs around £3, you can spend in excess of £100 in a year. Plus, take into account any other damage the leakage may make AND the extra sanitary rubbish you cause and, actually this is really cost effective.
A pair of Modibodi pants should last between 6 months and 2 years if you treat them right – so it does all even out in the end (at less damage to your pocket and the environment).
Does it matter how heavy your period is?
The gusset inside the pants contains three layers and is 3mm thick. The top layer locks away the moisture, the middle layer does the absorbing and the bottom layer is a ‘just in case’ one.
There are also different ‘weights’ to buy. A light option and a moderate option. The latter is designed for your heavier days.
I used to always go for the thicker towels or tampons to make sure I was completely covered so I would choose the moderate weight for the same reason.
So, in one word ‘no’!
Designed for Women, Teens and Tweens
Grace and I definitely have different tastes in underwear.
She would always choose the boy short style from the RED range for teens. I am more high waist – although it is great to see full shorts AND a maternity range too (oh, how I wish these had been around after I had given birth!). No matter which design and style you choose though, they look fab. You can also go swimming thanks to their swimwear range.
The Red range comes in size Youth 8-10 up to 14-16. The sizing we received for Grace were about right and it is recommended that they are on the snug side anyway.
The women’s range is the usual UK sizing – and they also include girls sizing too. If you are choosing from the adult range, the size is a bit bigger so if you are buying for a younger teen then either size down or go for the new RED range.

Get them. Period.
Seriously though, these pants are eco-friendly, cost effective and they give you so much more freedom. I used to do so much to disguise the fact that I was either carrying around tampons or towels. I am so envious – but VERY happy – of the fact that Grace will never have this predicament
