For the Love of Blogging – Day 19 of National Poetry Writing Month #NaPoWriMo
Day 19 of National Poetry Writing Month. I have now been blogging for over four and a half years and, as time has gone on, more and more people have started up a blog. Not that there is anything wrong with that in the slightest. What I have found harder and harder is the competitiveness of it all. The ‘must’ and ‘must not’ do’s. Who really is to say what is right and wrong? My poem today reflects this in ‘For the Love of Blogging’. I also include a reading of my poem at the top today.
For the Love of Blogging
Who’s to say what’s right or wrong
In this world of blogging
Don’t put an image first in this post
Use a microphone when vlogging
Always use SEO keywords
Publicise your post everywhere
I didn’t start all of this for the stats
So why do I even care?
Quibbling over payments
I never meant to monetise
What started as a love of writing
Now a business in disguise
If you do this and do that
You will be the top of the charts
But I don’t want to be competing
I do it for my love of the arts
You really must join my linky
Need to comment on one massive thread
All these rules and regulations
It really does in my head!
Making a blog post go viral
That is some peoples aim
Is that the ‘be all’ and ‘end all’?
It really is all just a game
So for the love of blogging
If it’s going to come then it will
Don’t do it to appease others
Do it just for the thrill

Aww, i love this post. I’m still a blogging newbie and at times i feel disheartened with the lack of views/shares, but then i remember why i started a blog in the first place, my love for writing!

Brilliant. Thanks! I am loving blogging at the moment, and to think I was thinking of jacking it in! I never realised I could write poetry though, and coming across your blog, and Maddy’s and Sara’s has turned that around and made me love blogging again. Here’s to ignoring all the rules. ?

So well put – I can totally empathise! I do sometimes look at what everyone else is doing and think ‘argh – why aren’t I achieving more?!’ but then I realise that’s silly and I just need to focus on the aspects of blogging I love – the community and the creativity and ignore all the pressure and ‘should be doings’! I hear you! I’ve been blogging for nearly three years now myself and it can throw you into a tailspin when you become aware of people who’ve been blogging for two or three months who seem so slick and have notched up more page views than I have in my entire online existence! Blogging is many things but the competitive amongst us tend to make the rest of us worry that we’re not doing it right which is nuts! Thanks for linking up to #thetruthabout Vicky X

I so identify with this… It can feel quite soul destroying sometimes, the competitive pressure in the blogging world – but then I remember that I didn’t get into blogging for all of that, but just to have a space to write and develop my thoughts. It’s been a bonus meeting lots of lovely people along the way, but I can definitely do without the rest of it… xx
It used to be for me – quite a long time ago now. But I watch and see people get so worked out about such insignificant things! Then I carry on living my life, writing my blog and enjoying it. Thanks Sophie xx

Love this! I also blog for the love of writing and blogging. It’s not about the stats and I’m least happy when I let myself become obsessed with the numbers. I sometimes find myself reading another blog post, getting to the end and seeing “253 Likes” and thinking “on this? Why would that many people like this post but I’m lucky if I get 24 likes?” Then I realize I just don’t care.
