The Journey is Our Future. A Poem #Prose4T

The Journey is Our Future

Feeling like forever
The distance travelled
A world over
The journey is long

Full of trials and tribulations
Forming and shaping me
Controlling who I become
The journey is hard

So many ifs and maybes
Where do we go from here?
What happens next?
The journey is questionable

Stepping into uncertainty
On the brink of what will be
Unable to control destiny
The journey is unforeseen

Time, it does so much
Our moment, is it here?
Quickly it has arrived
The journey is ahead

Standing at a crossroads
Which path will it follow?
Fate will lend a hand
The journey is our future

  1. A wonderful poem, I agree with many of the other commentators. Sometimes we don’t have control over where our journey takes us or whether our choices will turn out to be the right ones or not. Great post #ThePrompt

  2. This feels incredibly resonant, Vic. What direction do you take? And how do you know it’s right? It’s difficult to relinquish control and have to leave things to fate. But the truth is with some things we have little choice but to do just that. A beautiful poem – wishing you all the very best, lovely lady xxx

  3. Thinking of you as you make this particular journey, and wishing you safe travel and success

  4. As others have said, by not straining to rhyme poetry can be a lot more “honest” and emotional in its use of words. Your journey poem made me think upon my own life and how far I have travelled and what the future might bring 🙂

  5. This gave me chills reading this, it is beautiful and everything else everyone above has already said! I absolutely love your poems and they way you express so much emotion in so few words xx

  6. This is such a poignant poem! I could relate so much to it. Isn’t is amazing how so few words can trigger a wealth of emotions? You have put together those few words so very skillfully l. This is soul food!

  7. This is so good, even without your trademark rhyming, so much emotion in so few words. The loss of control and uncertainty shines through.

  8. I also agree with the other comments, this is one of your very best, the sentiment, rhythm, everything. I absolutely love it. I’m always impressed with your ability to rhyme (as you know it’s not one of my strengths!), but there is something so free and honest about this poem. Thank you so much for sharing with #ThePrompt x

    1. What a wonderful compliment. Thank you so much Sara – I will certainly try more like this. Thank you for hosting x

  9. Beautiful poem and I agree with the other comments that it’s one of your best – it’s so simply expressed but so powerful and poignant. There’s such a sense of longing in it, and each step on the journey feels so tangible. Lack of rhyme can be liberating in many ways – it opens up so many words that can help you express what you want without being bound by the constraint of trying to make the rhyme. I love the final line and the statement that “the journey is our future” – I hope that it will bring you all you wish for.

    1. Thank you so much Louise. Such wise words – and you are so very right. I think I need to try this more often 🙂 xx

  10. Beautiful, Victoria. Despite the fact that it doesn’t rhyme, it’s one of your best yet. There’s so much honesty and emotion here. I can feel your anxiety, your excitement, your fear about this journey. I’ve read several of your pieces for a long time now, and I have to say this evokes the most emotion. Perhaps the fact that you weren’t constricted to a rhyme scheme made it more so? There’s still a cadence to your words that makes the poem “move” (forgive me if that doesn’t make sense…). There’s still a rhythm to it…and it’s fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Victoria and for hosting us on this week’s #prose4t!

    1. What an amazing compliment, thank you so much Maria. With all this feedback I think I need to write more poetry like this! Thank you for linking Maria – I look forward to reading yours xx

  11. As someone who is not a huge fan of rhyming poetry, I think this is one of the best poems you’ve ever written. I think you can fit much more emotion into poetry if you aren’t focused on making it rhyme. It takes on a natural rhythm of it’s own. xx
