How to Baby Proof Our House #SafestYearYet

I am not really one for New Years Resolutions, I am more of ‘setting goals’ kinda girl. Things to tick off on a list is more for me than worrying about breaking a promise I had made to myself. Staying safe (something Slater & Gordon Lawyers know all about) or, more to the point, how to keep Rex safe is one of my main aims. How to baby proof our house wasn’t really something I considered when we were expecting Rex. When Grace was small, we lived with my mum and she automatically baby proofed everything. She was always child conscious having been a nursery nurse, nanny and the mother of 7 children.

How to Baby Proof Our House – my thoughts

As I look around, I have started to notice all the little things which could cause a big issue. Wires for the television, charger cables for our phone and even the cat litter tray and cat food and water bowls. These are all things that Rex is likely to gun for as he starts to become mobile.

Thankfully Grace was the sort of child who, when you told her no, listened. I never had to deal with scribbles on the wall or little hands grabbing things and pulling them off tables or the like. Even down to the fact that she knew not to go in muddy puddles without her wellies on! I fear Rex may be a completely different character in that respect.

We have started by having a good clear out of things that we don’t need. That way it is easier to see the wood for the trees. Surfaces are clearer, there is more space in the cupboards and everything that we do own will have it’s place. That way, we can ensure that the areas that Rex uses are clutter-free and easier to clean. Making it more sanitary as well as safer!

How to Baby Proof Our House Using the Right Products

Apart from clearing and cleaning, there are other measures we need to follow to baby proof our house. These include:

Plug socket safety covers. Funnily enough, it was Grace who spotted a couple of sockets which Rex may have fiddled with. They are the perfect size for little fingers so it was important to get that particular baby proof item in place pretty quickly.
Child Safety Cupboard Locks. DIY isn’t a strong point in our house so I was pleased to see that you can purchase magnetic cupboard locks which mean no drilling and take just 5 minutes to fit.
Door stoppers. One of the things I was most fearful of when Grace was small was her trapping her fingers in a door. From what I have seen, this is the thing that gets missed by many parents. Thankfully you can buy some fun foam door stoppers which are really easy to use.
