Barbecues Need Hygiene Too with Some Help from Dettol.
Dettol has long been a trusted name in my family. I can remember when any of us got sick, my Mum using a bottle of Dettol cleaning fluid to clean up…well…everything! I now do the same whenever Grace is sick. The smell of Dettol is a comforting one to me.
One of the things that people often forget with the rising temperatures during the summer is the potential for germs to spread. One of the most prevalent places for this to happen is the barbecue.
We all know about the risks of upset tummies due to under-cooked food but what about hygiene such as washing your hands and surfaces?
According to the Food Standards Agency, between June and August 2013, 120,000 extra cases of illness were recorded and a laid-back approach to the barbecue is a major contributing factor as well as a key contributor to the 5.5 million cases of food poisoning, which cause 20,000 hospitalisations and 500 deaths each year (Annual Report Of The Chief Scientist – Safer Food For The Nation, Food Standards Agency (FSA), 2013).
Dettol have also carried out their own studies. An investigation undertaken by the Global Hygiene Council during 2013 to 2014 found that seasonal stomach upsets could be linkedto poor hand, surface and utensil hygiene as much as they can to under-cooked meat, with new research revealing that nearly 50 per cent of people don’t wash their hands when preparing food and 75 per cent of preparation surfaces are home to more bacteria than a sanitary bin! It really does make you think, doesn’t it?
So, how can we make sure that we keep our barbecues free from the nigh on invisible nasties?
Dr Lisa Ackerley has shared her top tips with Dettol:
WIPE SURFACES
It is important to avoid using dishcloths to clean where possible, as new research has revealed nine out of ten are ‘heavily contaminated’ with bacteria such as E.coli. Make sure surfaces are hygienically cleaned by using a product such as Dettol Anti-bacterial Surface Cleansing Wipes & Spray, which kills 99.9% of bacteria that could contaminate barbecue shelves, the garden table and other surrounding surfaces.
WASH HANDS
Almost half of frequently touched items and surfaces are contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria 3 therefore it is essential that guests wash their hands when eating or handling food. New Dettol Anti-bacterial No Touch Hand Wash with E45, a dual-action solution, will kill 99.9% of bacteria at every wash and keep your hands feeling soft and replenished.
WHICH UTENSIL?
Studies have found that E.coli can survive for over 28 days on stainless steel surfaces6 such as cooking utensils so it is important to keep them thoroughly clean. Remember to think about using separate tongs, cutlery and utensils when handling cooked and uncooked meat to prevent cross contamination between equipment.
Dettol have kindly sent me some surface wipes – something that I really love to clean with as it makes things easy and less time consuming. It is easy to use for any mucky hand situation for both adults and children. Just place your hands underneath and the machine will do the work!
The other thing to bear in mind is your clothing – including those barbecue aprons! Just because you are using your washing machine, it doesn’t always mean that the harmful bacteria is gone. To help combat this, Dettol has a fantastic laundry cleanser. Simply add it to your wash to kill 99.9% of bacteria. It even works at temperatures as low as 15 degrees.
