One of the things we are keen to do before the summer comes at us full force is to transform or upgrade our garden space. Right now it is looking a bit tired and sad!
As the days are starting to get warmer, you too may be spending more time in your garden. Or perhaps, like us, you’re putting it off because your garden space is looking more plain than pleasing. If you’re not feeling any joy from sitting in your garden, perhaps these ideas will help.

How to make your garden space stand out
Play with the design rules Patios and garden decking provide a great space for entertaining. However, more often than not, they look very uniform. You’ll find pretty much the same set up in gardens right across the country. So, they can be uninspiring.
But they don’t have to be. It’s time to forget the normal set up and play with the design rules. Try adding some curves or creating several different levels. Don’t think that a square or rectangle are your only options.
Similarly, when you’re busy creating your borders and planting areas, don’t stick to tradition. Try a vertical garden or perhaps add some unusual shapes, materials and plants into your borders and beds.
Don’t be afraid of bright colours
Gardens can be awash with greens and browns, but sometimes it just isn’t enough. Fences and sheds are traditionally stained brown but with advances in outdoor paint, there’s more reason than ever to go for brighter colours.
If you fancy creating a real summer garden, take some inspiration from the classic British beach hut or the brightly painted houses of Newfoundland.
And if you’d like your planting to follow this brightly coloured scheme, then fill your borders with things like tulips, dahlias, dogwood and echinceas. So, you have something to catch the eye throughout the year and not just the summer.
Create a talking point
If you often have friends, family and neighbours over, you may fancy creating a talking point. Something that really makes your garden stand out.
It could be a big or unusual plant or tree that you’ve placed right in everyone’s eyeline. Or it could be a fancy garden feature such as a fountain, waterfall, fire pit or outdoor kitchen. Sculptures, statues, arches, and ornamental bridges and mirrors can all work too.
Modern materials can often be used to great effect too. Think stainless steel spheres and glass waterfalls. We’re used to seeing them at the Chelsea Flower Show or outside expensive hotels, but they can certainly make your garden stand out too.
