At the end of May, just before Rex’s first birthday, we made a welcome return to IVF Spain in Alicante. We were there to visit and take Grace and Rex to meet the staff and see where we had received our treatment.

About IVF Spain

IVF Spain is a fertility clinic based in Alicante, Spain. Their main aim is to help their patients to conceive a healthy baby by providing them with a personalised treatment plan. They do this by catering to their preferred language to ensure that there are no mistakes and that there is a full understanding between everyone involved.

IVF Spain are constantly re-assessing their staff as well as the medical treatments they provide. They update themselves with all the latest innovation and technology to ensure that their patients receive the best possible treatment. This means that they are able to specialise and achieve positive outcomes in many complex cases such as:

• Patients with implantation failure.
• Immunology and genetic problems which affect conception.
• Repeated miscarriages including those using anonymous egg donation

Our Experience of IVF Spain

We had previously had IVF egg donor treatment at a clinic in Cyprus. We had a bad experience – and I am not just saying this because the treatment was unsuccessful. The manner in which they conducted business was poor, there were hidden costs that we did not know about and we had a bad feeling about the whole thing. We knew, on the day of transfer, that they were worried. Not only did they opt to transfer 4 embryos but they also charged Ross for another sample ‘just in case’.

But this post isn’t about them.

IVF Spain in Alicante couldn’t have been more different. Our experience was extremely positive. All bar one phone call and a misunderstanding, the staff have been supportive, kind and understanding.

The clinic is a dedicated building in the suburbs of Alicante, Spain. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you are entering a Spa rather than a clinical building. The surroundings are calm and relaxing. The reception area is spotless and the staff always have a welcoming smile for you.

The treatment rooms are all wonderfully decorated and extremely comfortable. Even their bathrooms are beautiful!

Their donor building is separate to the main clinic and, situated to the rear, is where their marketing staff are located.

Our Initial Consultation with IVF Spain

Originally, Ross and I felt that the initial consultation was a waste of time. We couldn’t have been more wrong. It gave us a great chance to find out all about the clinic and their procedures. It meant that they could carry out initial tests – which included a genealogy test on Ross (I had already had one) and a smear on me as well as an internal examination of my womb.

Because we were runners up in their competition, they covered the cost of the hotel for our initial consultation whilst we covered the flights. They put us up in a beautiful Golf Resort hotel just a short walk from the clinic and not too far from the beach either.

Coming away from the consultation, we felt relaxed and positive. We understood their procedures and we came away with a plan. They were going to run a mock cycle and we also took home some of the medication and details to order the rest once we were back in the UK.

I totally recommend the initial consultation. I firmly believe that we would have been lost without it.

Our Treatment

We arrived in Spain on 23rd October 2016. Our donor was almost ready for the egg retrieval and we able to relax and enjoy some time together (despite the fact that Ross was trying to finish a script!).

We visited the clinic a couple of times over the 10 days we were in Alicante. The first time was to see the clinic and go over the procedures. The next was for Ross to provide his sample. The final time was for the transfer itself.

We stayed at the Hotel Maya on an all-inclusive basis. It was the perfect base. They had a swimming pool, were a 5 minute walk from a huge shopping mall and just a walk away from their Metro service. We were also able to walk down to the very beautiful harbour and to the top of the castle situated right next door to the hotel! We were not short of things to do to keep us occupied.

The Embryo Transfer

The day of transfer was also the day we travelled home, however, the clinic assured us that this would not be a problem at all.

We were shown to a beautiful, calm private room with lovely music playing through the speakers. After putting on on clinical gowns and hats we were shown to the transfer room and, unlike the last time, Ross was allowed to come in with me for the transfer.  We watched as our little embryo was picked up in the tube and then brought into the room and transfer to me via the catheter. There was some wonderful classical music playing and it was very emotional.

I then received some acupuncture treatment and, after some time relaxing and Ross picking up our medication, we left for the airport.

The aftercare

Of course, our treatment was successful as regular readers will know. But, even if it hadn’t been, I feel certain that IVF Spain would have been there for us, checking in and making sure that we came to terms with everything. As it was, they were they to support us through the continuation of the medication, advising us of each step.

Once we were ‘out of the woods’ they carried on checking in with us and we received a beautiful gift of a classical music CD to play to our baby.
