5 Skills Every Successful Blogger Needs

When I became a blogger, back in 2012, I wasn’t aware just how big a skill set was needed to ensure that you covered all your bases. I look back now and wondered how on earth I managed!

However, I am one of those on-the-job learners. I like to try something to see if it works for me. There are some skills every successful blogger needs when they start out. I have listed what I consider to be the main ones below.

Content writing skills

Content writing is a bit of an art and I think it is important to make sure that the reader finds your text engaging enough to keep reading. I try and sprinkle mine with a bit of humour and try and type as though I am talking to my friend.

On top of this, little did I know that when I chose my options at school, that I would use my typing skills on an everyday basis! Of course, back then, it wasn’t a computer keyboard that I would be putting the ‘asdf ;lkj exercise to use on, but a typewriter.

I have no clue what my typing speed is these days so I put myself to the test using the Fenetic Wellbeing Typing Game. It gives you subjects such as movies, music and tv shows and I managed to get into the top 50% for the films subject. It is a bit addictive so be warned!

Photo editing Skills

Photo editing was certainly something I never considered in the early days of blogging. As the years have gone on and blogging has become more competitive, I have managed to hone these skills to the point where I am now a professional photographer. It is definitely my favourite thing in the world!

Social networking skills

Mastering Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest has been important for my blog over the years. I tend to fall in and out of love with different platforms at different times. This kind of helps though as I am one of those people who is better when they are juggling a few things rather than being bored with doing one!

Communication skills

I have found that my ability to communicate with people as come in very handy during my blog years.

When I first started writing I worked as a driving instructor. I needed strong communication skills for this and it seems to have spilled over into what I do now. I am confident about meeting people in person as much as I am speaking on the phone and typing an email.

Basic website skills

This was something I certainly did not have when I first started my blog. It was a little scary at first, finding my way around a WordPress dashboard. What if I broke the internet?!

I learned pretty quickly that I wasn’t going to do this and there was always the ability to reset things to the last back-up of my site via my host provider (I certainly would not have understood that 7 years ago!!).
