Ways to Save for Your Child’s Important Life Events

*Remunerated Post*

Raising a child can be expensive and the costs do not stop once they reach adulthood. In fact, things can get quite a bit more expensive. Your child will have to find a way to buy a car, go to university, get married and move out. All of which cost a lot of money. So, understandably, usually, you will end up having to help them out.

But, there is another way, which is to start saving for those important life events, now. That way you and your child will not need to go into debt, at a later date, to be able to afford them.

Start saving when they are born

The sooner you start the better. If you can afford to do so, open a junior ISA for them when you are born. One hundred pounds is all you need to get started. You can find out more about these special child-friendly savings accounts by clicking the link.

Usually, you will receive enough money from friends and relatives to be able to open an ISA. In fact, if you tell them that you are planning to open one there is a higher chance that they will give you cash instead of yet another cute baby grow that you may not even use. You may also find that they regularly give you money to add to what is already there. A lot of grandparents like to do this when they discover that their grandchildren have a savings account.

Just bear in mind that, when you open a Junior ISA, you cannot touch the cash. Once it has been deposited, it has to stay there until your child is 18. This is not the case with most other types of child-savings accounts.

Encourage your child to learn a skill

There are certain skills that are always in demand, things that they do not teach you at school.

If your child shows an interest in cooking, hairdressing, beauty treatments, coding, electronics, decorating, design, teaching or any other skill, support them. Let them learn as much as they can about that subject. Being able to cut hair, do makeup, decorate a room or teach someone math are all great ways to earn money on the side. It will make it far easier for them to earn extra cash to pay for important life events and stay out of financial trouble.

Open a regular bank account for your child

When your child is old enough to do so, open a regular bank account for them. Let them take responsibility for it and run things with a little bit of oversight from you.

This will teach them what they need to know about handling money. It may also be worth encouraging them to divide the cash they have up into pools of money for use to achieve certain important life goals. For example, cash for driving lessons, money to cover their living expenses while they are in further education.
