Is Reading Eggs a Good Program for Children to Learn

Last year I wrote a post sharing that Reading Eggs had found it’s way back into our life. At that point, it had been 10 years since I had first reviewed Reading Eggs, an online learning support program for children which assists them with reading and maths. I think that there is something be said here for the longevity.

What is Reading Eggs?

Reading Eggs combines an online learning resource which hosts reading games, puzzles and rewards but there are also FREE downloadable resources, regular progress reports for parents and a shop where you can purchase a range of books which support the programme.

The main Reading Eggs programme is aimed at children aged 3 to 7 years and this stretches to Reading Eggs Junior geared towards the 2 to 4 year age group, Fast Phonics suitable for the 5 to 10 year olds and Reading Eggspress for 7 to 13 year olds.

As if reading support wasn’t enough, there is also the fantastic Mathseeds programme for aged 3 to 9 years. In a similar vein to Reading Eggs, there are games, songs and golden acrod rewards to be earned.

How does Reading Eggs Work?

The structure of each and every program on the Reading Eggs app is easy to follow and adapts to your child’s ability. You are able to adjust the level of where your child starts learning to ensure that it is not too easy nor too difficult – both of which could be off-putting for them.

Each programme has it’s own character. There is Reggie for Reading Eggs, Buddy for Mathseeds and the Yetis for Fast Phonics wher, as you complete each map, there is a new home on the mountain peak! There are also some rather cute little snowball like critters!

What does Rex love about Reading Eggs?

Rex is very much a self-starter when it comes to maths and reading. It is his big idea of fun and, where we pretty much had to force Grace to sit down and use the app, Rex regularly asks to borrow my phone to play/learn. On top of this, he has the Reading & Maths Essential Skills for Year 1 Bundle of books and he is always getting them out and completing the pages on his own!

The great thing is that Reading Eggs regularly emails me updates detailing Rex’s progress – so I know exactly where he is on the learning maps.

Any drawbacks?

The only real drawback we have is that Reading Eggs is not available on his kids Fire Tablet from Amazon. This means that he is restricted to my phone – which in turn, restricts him on when he can play it. Hopefully Reading Eggs will get that amended!
