TONKA Mighty Metals Fleet Review

Please note that we were gifted these products in return for a review

TONKA Toys have been a part of my life ever since I can remember. My brother – who is still obsessed with cars to this day – was always on about TONKA and played with his vehicles incessantly!

When we were offered the chance for Rex to experience TONKA, I knew he would love them. We recently visited Center Parcs Longleat and wanted to take a few toys for him to play with, so we decided to surprise him with two of the brand new Mighty Metal Fleet toys from TONKA (Available from Amazon). We knew that they would be durable enough for both indoor and outdoor play – and we weren’t wrong!

About Tonka

TONKA originated in 1947 in Mound, Minnesota originally created and manufactured by Mound Metalcraft , who were a manufacturer of garden implements. The company began selling metal toys, which soon became the primary business. In November 1955, Mound Metalcraft changed its name to TONKA Toys Incorporated. The name TONKA comes from the Dakota Sioux word “Tanka” or Tonka, which means “great” or “big”.

For almost 70 years, TONKA trucks have been the undisputed kings of the sandbox for decades. Built on the notion that “a toy shouldn’t break just because a child plays with it,” they’re strong, sturdy and long lasting. Back in the ’70s, TONKA even had an elephant stand on one, just to prove their point.

The Mighty Metal Fleet

Tonka currently have two designs in their brand new Metal Fleet; the Mighty Dump Truck and the Garbage Truck.

We initially gave Rex the Garbage Truck and he knew what it was straight away! He was a little disappointed that the back did not open but he soon got over this and it became a great ride-on vehicle for a couple of his cuddly toys. We decided to hold back the dumper for the following day – and he wasn’t any less excited to receive this.

We decided to take both vehicles to the makeshift beach at Longleat Center Parcs and they were the perfect toys to play with in the sand, especially the dumper truck who had the task of transporting the sand to and fro in order to construct our sand castle!

Given the chance, Rex would spend hours on a beach and these two TONKA trucks give him an added reason to look forward to this – as well as being a great addition to his garage at home.

It is easy to see why TONKA trucks were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York back in 2001. They are geared towards ages 3 to 6 years and are the perfect size for small (and big) hands.

They have a fantastic set of tyres on them which are perfect for rough terrain and speedy when going across smoother floors. They are sturdy and whilst they are well weighted, they are not too heavy to play with. You can carry them around but, as is evidenced from our trip away, they transport easily.

The RRP is £14.99 (Available from Amazon) which I think is well-placed for a toy that lasts and lasts and lasts!
