Review: Gigantosaurus The Game

The XBox One is a pretty big deal in our house. Ross regularly uses it for his relaxation time and has started to share some of his games with Rex. When I heard about the release of Gigantosaurus The Game, I knew it would be something that would suit the whole family – and something even I could play!

Gigantosaurus is brought to you by Outright Games, the leading publisher of interactive kids entertainment. To give you an idea, they work with some of the biggest names in the world including Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Dreamworks Animation.

Together with multi award winning animation studio Cyber Group Studios, Gigantosaurus: The Game is an all new roarsome 1-4 player adventure based on the world of the hugely popular Disney Junior CGI animated show ‘Gigantosaurus’. 

Players can explore and race across vast, prehistoric worlds in a one-of-a-kind dinosaur adventure full of secrets, puzzles and epic racing levels that can be enjoyed with 1-4 players, perfect creative entertainment for families and their kids to play together.

The success of Gigantosaurus depends on what angle you’re looking at it from – if you’re a hardcore gamer looking for diversion after having completed the RE3 remake, you’re in the wrong place, but if you’re looking for something gentler, more family friendly, bright, colourful and with an all-around pleasant feeling, you’re onto a winner.

Gigantosaurus sees the player able to switch between four dino characters, each with their own special ability, in order to explore assorted landscapes, hunt down items, and solve puzzles of varying difficulty. It’s a simple premise that is easy to pick up and get into without having to play countless tutorials or wrestle with a complicated control system.A

A Straightforward Control System

That straightforward control system is a strong positive of the game when it comes to being family friendly, something that combines with the bright colours, beautiful graphics and fun characters to prove engaging to younger players. My toddler, though barely able to hold the X Box One controller in his hands yet, took great delight in finding out he was able to twiddle sticks and press buttons to move the dinos, make them jump and spin around – the peals of delight this caused when he realised his actions were causing the movement on the screen were a joy to behold.

While a 2 year old isn’t going to get anywhere with the quests in the game, it’s reasonable to think a younger gamer would be able to cope with the undemanding play, especially on the easy level, which offers helpful tracking hints onscreen, and it’s an interesting enough game for an older campaigner like myself to be happy to play alongside their children.

Any drawbacks?

The main drawback of the game is the visual system – rather than mapping control of the camera to the right stick, allowing the player to dictate what they are looking at around the lush landscape, the game shifts the point of view based on what the programmers want you to see. That would be fine if the game were linear, but since it’s more of a sandbox outing, this can make it difficult to explore, as the direction you are moving often doesn’t correlate with the in-game map, leading to a level of confusion and frustration. Still, this isn’t a major complaint, merely a nuisance, and doesn’t take away much from the experience overall.
