5 Winter Driving Tips

As a former driving instructor, I know how important it is to maintain your car. It is even more important during the colder months. So, here are 5 winter driving tips to help ensure your vehicle is in tip-top condition and ready for any snow and ice which comes our way!

Make sure your car is stocked with essentials

There is no point going out in the poor winter weather if you aren’t prepared. Make sure you have some extra warm clothing or blankets, a torch, bottles of water and some non-perishable foods such as crisps or nuts. Also, it is a great idea to carry a shovel – just in case that snow hits when you least expect it!

Drive Sensibly

When you are driving it is important to leave a large distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. In normal weather conditions it is a two-second gap but in ice and snow it becomes a 10-second gap as breaking distances increase. In most cases, accidents are your fault if you hit the back of someone! Also, use the highest gear possible on slippery surfaces. It means there is less power going into the wheels and, therefore, less chance of skidding.

Switch your lights on!

All too often I see so many cars without their lights on in the darker, wintry conditions. If you want to be seen then you need to make a small effort and switch those dipped beams on!

Service your car

Getting your car service will mean that you can ensure that you are fully prepared without any hidden surprises. The garage can make sure your car batteries are fully functional. This will ensure your car is still able to start when it is cold! They will also check the suitability of your tyres and brakes, top up radiators and screen wash with anti-freeze and make sure your MOT is up to date. 

Check levels and tyres regularly 

Of course, the garage will do this for your if you service your car. However, it is important that you stay on top of it as well. Checking the pressures will mean that your tyres will hold the road better and will make sure you brake more efficiently. With all the salt on the roads, your windscreen will get dirty quicker so it is important to make sure your screen wash is regularly topped up to include anti-freeze. Also, make sure your oil and water levels are where they need to be.
