My Tribute to the Stars We’ve Lost – Day 21 of National Poetry Writing Month #NaPoWriMo
I was so upset to hear of the death of the very clever, very funny Victoria Wood yesterday – another VW. She was one of my major inspirations when it came to poetry and lyric writing and I can remember listening to ‘The Ballad of Barry and Freda’ when I was much younger and laughing hysterically. There has been such a huge loss of talent so far this year so for Day 21 of National Poetry Writing Month, I have decided to share with you my tribute to the stars that we have lost so far. There is a recording of my reading at the top of the poem.

2016 what are you doing?
All these stars that you are stealing
So much talent disappearing
Whilst their fans are left here reeling
The Starman himself, David Bowie
Left songs for a generation.
Record producer George Martin
He caused a music liberation
Colin Vearncombe, lead singer of Black
I only remember one song
Glenn Frey, one of the Eagles
Solo, ‘The Heat is On’
Natalie Cole, daughter of Nat
Singing I Love You So
Sylvia Anderson, voice of Penelope
Thunderbirds are go
Ed Stewart, a DJ from my youth
Also known as Stewpot.
Paul Daniels, the magic man
You’ll like this but, no, not a lot
To Kill a Mockingbird, memories of school

Saturday evenings with my tea
Ronnie Corbett joins his pal
Four Candles was the best.
Married to Liza Minnelli a while
Was the man called David Gest
Victoria Wood a talented lady
I really did always rate her
Colin Thomas, he was Blakes 7
Took control of The Liberator
Terry Wogan, his dulcet tones
He was one of radio’s finest.
Alan Rickman, made an impact
As the Sheriff with his dryness
So you see, so many goodbyes
Moved on to another place
But thanks to what they’ve left behind
We will be reminded of their face

A lovely tribute. I like how you got Paul Daniels’ catchphrase it. You really do feel the sense of loss throughout but the verse at the end is almost hopeful around their legacy xx #Prose4T
