Eczema has always been a part of my family history, ever since I can remember. I know that I suffered with it badly as a baby and I find that it often makes an unwelcome return – especially if I am worried or under pressure (which means most of the time these days!). Grace and Rex have also had their own issues when it comes to eczema and other skin conditions.

For these reasons, I have decided to give Epaderm a try and, so far, have found that it is a fabulous product which is really helping without the fear of using damaging medication.

My Experience with Eczema

 

I can remember a particularly worrying time with my eczema patches on the lead up to my first marriage. There was a lot going on. I was in my early twenties, both my and my husband-to-be’s parents were splitting and I had a very busy job.

I can recall that the eczema first made a major appearance in a patch on my neck. Prior to that, I can’t really recall a time where I was aware or concerned about it. You aren’t really aware of your appearance in quite the same way as a youngster.

The embarrassing bits

The patch on my neck soon spread to areas around my mouth. So, not only did I look like I had a massive love bite on my neck, I also looked a bit like the joker. I was embarrassed. It was also in the days when there were less natural products to benefit from so I was reluctantly using steroid cream. 

Thankfully, the eczema on my face has never come back but I have had lumps and bumps on my hands. This is a condition known as dyshidrotic eczema, or dyshidrosis. It is where blisters develop on the soles of your feet and/or the palms of your hands. I find that the blisters are usually itchy and turn up when I am really stressed. 

At almost 50, I am far less concerned about my looks and have become comfortable with feeling that people should accept me as I am. I do want to look after my skin though and have started to moisturise using Epaderm cream. I have found it both effective and soothing. 

How it has affected my daughter, Grace

When Grace came along I was wary of the fact that eczema is a hereditary condition so I had a feeling that she would be affected. She was. I used to use natural products on her and found that they tended to work. I also dealt with it at the first signs and managed to keep it under control.

As the years have gone by, Grace seems to be affected by eczema far less but does have keratosis pilaris – something that both annoys and embarrasses her on a regular basis. I have regularly been at a loss and I haven’t really known how to treat it but now, thanks to Epaderm, I am starting to see a change for the better. This is important for Grace. She is almost 13 and is starting to be more aware of her looks and how she presents herself. The last thing I want is for her not to feel comfortable in her own skin.

How it has affected my son, Rex

With the fact that Rex is not biologically related to me, I did not know what to expect when it came to skin conditions for him.

Back in April, Rex developed sore patches in each of his arm pits and, on one side, small spots started to develop. I visited the doctors and was initially told it was chicken pox. My mum sense was twitching and I didn’t believe that he had this so we returned to the doctors and was told that it was shingles.

I am still not certain that he had either of these things as, a few weeks later, on another trip to the doctors, I was told that Rex had eczema coupled with a fungal infection and I was to treat each condition individually using a fungal cream and a mild steroid – something I have always been fearful of.

Thankfully, it seems to have all but disappeared but that hasn’t stopped me using Epaderm on Rex after his bath as a soothing cream and moisturiser and have been really impressed so far. I will continue to use it for as long as necessary and hopefully Rex will take the mantle from me and continue to apply it himself.

Final Thoughts

With the fact that Epaderm is fragrance free as well as free from colouring and SLS, I am looking forward to finally using a product which is kind to our skin without the worry of any long-term effects.
