Many people wrongly assume that when the weather starts to improve, they can turn their boiler off and wait until you need to heat your home up again. Unfortunately this isn’t the case.

What should I do with my heating?
Even though you are unlikely to need to switch the heating on over the summer (although, who can tell in this country?!), it is recommended that if you do switch off for an extended amount of time, that you turn your boiler on every so often. This will prevent it from seizing up due to lack of use.
What should I do with my boiler?
This depends on which type of boiler you have. If it is an older boiler with a pilot light, it would probably be a good idea to turn it off completely. If not, the pilot light will continue to burn gas. However, newer, more efficient boilers tend to use barely any energy when put on ‘standby’. All this said though, unless you have a poorly insulated cylinder, there’s not much point in turning your boiler off at all.
Some combi boilers have a summer and winter mode so it just means switching it over.
It also depends on the appliances you use. During the summer, your boiler will need to heat up the water which you are using. However, if you have an electric shower and a dishwasher and don’t mind doing a little washing up with cold water, you could easily save yourself money by turning off your boiler completely. A dishwasher usually heats the water directly from the mains, whilst an electric shower can heat water in its own unit.
What about servicing?
It is a good idea to arrange your annual service in August or September. Not only does this mean that your boiler is ready for the winter but, if there are any issues, you can get them fixed in time.
You can arrange a service through a registered plumber. A full service will help your boiler run more efficiently. Also, any issues will be picked up and fixed early to prevent any major damage.
