Big Steps Activity Cube from Smyths Toys

At 15 months old, we have quickly realised that Rex loves understanding how things work. One of his favourite things is posting his toys and putting things together. He can sit for ages and try to work something out.

Smyths Toys recently sent us the Big Steps Activity Cube. Read on to find out more!

 

The Big Steps Activity Cube

One of the things I want to be able to do with Rex is make sure that he is kept busy. Continuing to find things to do with him to do isn’t so easy during the days when I find kid games a bit boring!

This cube has 5 different sides of activity. Your little one can explore music, shapes and it has a safe mirror that is great for self-discovery.

The music side has a 5 note light up keyboard. They can change sounds to make it into a trumpet or even animal noises! Plus, the musical note can be pressed and you can listen to one of the familiar tunes which plays out for you.

There is a second music side which incorporates rhythm. As they use tap out their rhythm on the drum pad flashes along using different colours.

To help discover cause and effect there is a side which has a selection of gears to turn. Then there is another side to encourage dexterity where you wiggle the sliders around with the mirror in the middle.

Finally, Rex’s favourite, is a 4-piece shape sorter. A green heart, yellow circle, blue triangle and purple square which all have colourful pictures on them.

What does this toy encourage?

The Big Steps Activity Cube encourages creative play, sensory development and motor skills. In fact the hold Big Steps range has been designed with all children in mind to help their development.

Creative play means that each toy is a storytelling opportunity as well as helping them to look at things like problem-solving and developing their self-expression.

Sensory development is brought about through sounds using the drum and the keyboard as well as the bright colours and shapes.

What does Rex think of the Big Steps Activity Cube?

Like any child, Rex seemed to be more interested in the box at first (!). Anyway, he soon got over that when he saw the shapes appear. As I said at the start of my post, he loves posting and putting things together and the shape sorter side is a big win for him!

The shapes are a good size for him to pick up and handle. He has become somewhat frustrated if he can’t do something and has been known to throw a temper-tantrum! Thankfully not with this one as it is a little easier for him to do.

He also loves the drum and has sat their grinning on a number of occasions as he hits it! The shape of things to come I think!
