This time of the year is definitely more rife for illness, being sick and getting the flu. The advent of the flu jab has eased things off a little but, unless a magical potion is found to cure all illness, at least one member of your family is bound to get sick at this time of the year.
As a child, I can distinctly remember the thermometer my mum would use to take our temperature. Every time she put it near our mouths, she would repeat the warning ‘don’t bite it’. The reason being was that it was glass – so pretty understandable really! Anyway, really technology has come a long way since I was a child and I have been sent the brand new Thermo by Withings, the worlds first no-contact thermometer, to review.
Setting up the Thermo
The Thermo is extremely easy to set up. All you need to do is download the app – software requirements are IOS 8+ or Android 5.0+ – and then follow the instructions. Firstly you input your family’s details by a creating a profile for each member. This includes their name, date of birth, height and weight. Once this quick and easy process has been followed, you then need to connect your device to the app.
In order to connect the Thermo to the app, simply follow the instructions on the screen and, by holding down the button on the Thermo, a message saying Set Up’ will appear. The app will then search for your device and once this shows up just tap the screen to confirm. You then need to confirm the Wi-Fi network with which to connect to and that’s it, you’re done!
How to take a temperature
This has to be one of the easiest things ever! All you need to do is remove the green cap which covers the end of the Thermo and then press the white button to switch it on. You will see a moving bar on the Thermo (a bit like Knightrider!) showing you that the device is on.
You then place the Thermo in the middle of your forehead approximately 1cm above the skin. You then slowly scan across to the hairline on the side of your head, making sure you scan straight across rather than down to the side.
A double vibration on the Thermo then tells you that the scan is complete and straight away, your temperature reading will show up on the screen.
Then, here comes more clever technology. By pushing your finger up or down on the touch-sensitive dotted white lights next to the temperature reading, you can then assign the result to the correct member of your family by locating their name and then pushing the white button.
An instant result
The reading not only gives you a temperature in degrees celsius but it also colour-codes it for you. So green tells you there is no fever, orange indicates a mild fever and red tells you that you have a high fever.
The temperature reading will automatically sync with the app via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth without your smart device next to you. This then enables you to keep track of your data and you can view your temperature history on your timeline inside the app.
Once synced with your app, then, based on age, fever history, and symptoms, it gives you advanced health advice. On top of that, you can enter comments and medications, and even photos in any user profile. This helps you see if the treatment is effective and allows you to have a complete history to share with a doctor if necessary.

Of all the products I have reviewed on my blog, I have to say that I think the Thermo is one of my favourites. It’s clever technology means it is easy for all our family to use and it means we can keep track on any one of us if we are feeling poorly. Even Grace can take her own temperature – and I know it will update to the app on my phone. With the fact that I have been taking so much medication during our fertility treatment, I have found this nifty gadget extremely useful and very handy to keep track of my health. I can thoroughly recommend the investment.
The Thermo reguarly retails at £89.95. You can find more details about this device from Withings by Nokia, over on their website
