One of the things that we tend to get a little stuck with in the mornings is deciding on what to eat for breakfast. Have the same old, same old can become a bit monotonous and boring. One of the cereals that we do enjoy is Cheerios so when we were told that there was a brand new CHEERIOS Oat Crisp® appearing on our shelves we were looking forward to testing it out for ourselves.
This new cereal is made with crunchy flakes of oat mixed with light crispy O’s – the part that Cheerios are widely recognised for. Including the oats means that a bowl a day is a natural source of beta-glucan that can help lower cholesterol, whilst also being high in fibre and low in saturated fat. This has been proven with the fact that cholesterol charity Heart UK have given this new box of goodness their seal of approval!
Over half of all adults in the UK have raised cholesterol which is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease according to their studies. They have found that oats are rich in beta-glucan which binds with cholesterol in the digestive tract and stops it being absorbed into the body. It means that just one bowl of these will provide 1/3 of your recommended intake of beta-glucan and the experts recommend a daily intake of 3g oat beta-glucan to obtain the beneficial cholesterol-lowering effect. As well as the health benefits, you also know you’ll be getting a delicious and nutritious breakfast – so it’s quite the combination!
Expert Nutritionist Juliette Kellow says: “High cholesterol can affect anyone at any age, although the risk tends to increase as we get older. Many people are unaware their cholesterol level is too high as there are often no outward signs. However, it’s a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease, so it’s important you get it checked. Having a bowl of cereal that’s packed with oats – which provide beta-glucan – makes a great start to the day.”
The Cheerios brand is well established and has built up a reputation over the last 20 years so, the fact that they have introduced the cholesterol-fighting oats into their range will mean that this will help many families without losing the great taste that this cereal is know for.
There are two flavour options; one is the standard Cheerio range and the other is a very welcome cinnamon flavour. Welcome in the fact that Grace and I both love cinnamon! It has definitely become a quick, firm favourite with us.
