I can distinctly remember my first car. My mum and dad bought it from a friend. It was a Datsun 180b estate – rather large for a first car but I still loved it. It looked a bit battered and bruised but this gave it character and I used to drive it to HMV in Guildford where I worked. I would also give my brothers and sisters lifts and, it was my sister, Harriette, and I that started to call her Greased Lightning! She was also named Bertha after Henry’s car in the programme ‘Neighbours’.
My next couple of cars didn’t really have a name. They didn’t have enough character really. But then, I became a driving instructor.
When I branched out on my own, the name of my driving school was ‘Made Easy Driving Tuition’ and my first car was beautiful. It was a Mini One Diesel in a lovely shade of blue. To do this day, it remains the best car I ever had and I was so sad when I had to sell it.
It was one of my students who said that I should give her a name so, over the course of the following week, I asked all the people I was teaching at the time for their suggestions. A week later, and the original student came up with the best name. MeMe (pronounced Mimi). Not only did it sound a bit like mini, but it was also the initials of my driving school name.
When I went back to teaching, I purchased a red mini. Not quite the same as the blue one and it was certainly not as reliable. She was the last car I gave a name to though and that was Ruby.
Co-op have now launched The ‘Name Your Ride’ tool to enable you to create a ‘name’ for your car, by answering some simple questions associated with your vehicle and who you are. After answering a short selection of question’s, a personalised registration plate with the ideal name for your car is presented – and I had a bit of fun using it!
I decided to enter the details for my blue mini and see what it would come up with, and this is what I got!
I think it is perfect! Do you name your car? If so, what is it?
