For me, photographs are an important part of our memories and – according to Worldstores and their insights – many of those special moments are made in our gardens. I have to say that I couldn’t agree more.
I was asked by Worldstores if I would share a special family photo taken in the garden of a moment to remember. And I had just the the thing. The Queens Diamond Jubilee Garden Party from 2012.
This is my most treasured memory of that weekend. A photo of me, Ross and Grace. As you can see, we dressed up for the occasion and Union flag face paint was an important part of the look (note the cool looking barbecue to Ross’ left!).
We were at my brother’s and sister-in-law’s house in Old Woking and we were joined by my Mum and Step-dad and all my sisters, their partners and their children. The weather was beautiful and it meant we were able sit out in the garden eating salads, quiche and some barbecue food and, of course, cake. It meant lots and lots of chatting. We even held a disco in my brother’s garage!
As the evening drew near, the television went on in the lounge and we all sat and watched the concert. Then Grace joined my sister in law to take Lottie the dog for a walk. These are memories that I will always be fond of.
Funnily enough I have a similar memory of some 35 years before! I was just 6 years old and it was the Queens Silver Jubilee back in 1977. We had to make a crown as part of a competition and – with a lot of help from my Mum – I won first prize! This is me, aged 6, in our garden at our house in Horsell, Surrey, modelling my prize-winning hat and some rather crazy red, white and blue socks!
I don’t think that we had a garden party but the weather was just as lovely back then. I do remember playing on our climbing frame in our back garden – with the crown still sitting on top of my head! I was very proud that I had won.
