My Snow Memories #DreamingofSnow PLUS WIN a £50 Go Outdoors Voucher

At the moment Inntravel are running a campaign #DreamingofSnow, asking bloggers to share their snow memories and I thought I would share mine with you. I could probably count on both hands the memories I have of snow. All of which are really magical.

There are a number of recollections from when I was a child. Here is a photo of one them showing me, my brothers Oliver and Jeremy and my sisters Harriette and Davina:

There was Grace’s first snow back when we lived with my Mum:

Then there is the first one that we experienced with Ross. I can remember turning round and bringing Grace home from school, fearful for the fact that I wouldn’t get her back. Then Ross and Grace decided to go outside for a snowball fight. That was interesting!

But I think that the one that stands out in my mind the most was when it was just me and Grace living in our little flat in a village in Berkshire. It snowed so badly that it felt like we were cut off for days! The village shop ran out of milk and bread and Grace and I lived on soup and hot chocolate. We made snowmen and snow dogs and, together with our neighbour, Roxy, we cleared the garages and drive into our flats (we were a bit miffed that the landlord didn’t even bother – he was OK, he had a Landrover!).  But it was wonderful. Grace and I felt like we had our own little world where we could snuggle up and get warm.

With the threat of snow hanging over us at this time of the year, it is important to ensure that you wrap up warm. Go Outdoors have a fabulous array of clothing and equipment to keep you safe and warm during your outdoor pursuits.

The last time it snowed here was just after we got our dog, Betsy. She was only a few weeks old and watching her come to terms with this freezing cold white stuff was hilarious. It’s been two years now since we had enough snow to play in so I’m waiting for more!

We actually got our old dog due to the snow. I was about 6 being pulled along on my sledge. A car slowed down ahead of us and threw a small bundle out into the snow. As we got near, it was moving. It was a little black puppy. Mum wrapped it in her coat and put it on the sledge next to me. I didn’t want to go to school after that I wanted to go home with my mum and the dog. When I got home later, the dog was washed and dry and mum had tried to find somewhere to take her, but in the end had decided to keep her. She became our dog, the lovely, gentle Molly, who sadly is no longer with us. It was a long time ago. I am so glad that horrible person threw her out, as we would never had been honoured enough to spend those years with such a loving dog. All thanks to the snow.

I remember being snowed in ,1987 in the south east , watching the snow fall continually for about 3 weeks , and walking out to try and get bread and milk . My husband was a carpet fitter and couldn’t get to work , I remember an irate customer complaining he hadn’t got to them on the Isle of Sheppey , even though the military were airlifting food to the island as it was cut off , that was unbelievable .

I remember having really bad snow the day of my nan’s funeral at least 6″-8″ and the funeral was at the top of a hill, Nan would have loved laughing at us all slipping and sliding in our wellies, the lovely thing was that nans friends, and relatives some in there late 70s had walked for miles in the snow to show there respect. Although a very sad memory a happy one too to know she meant that much to people that they would trudge for miles through heavy snow. And my nan would have found it highly amusing

Two rather scary but very memorable events took place when I was a student. The first happened when I was out walking in snow at Easter in the Scottish Highlands. As I walked over this gully the snow around me broke off and avalanched. I slid down on a large patch of snow until this hit a boulder field where it broke up. With my cushion of snow gone my bum and coccyx hit the rocks. I stood up above the snow and shouted “That was incredible!” I then realised my back and bum hurt. I was ok after a couple of days rest so all’s well that ends well!
The second was when we were sliding on snow with plastic sacs. I mistook the advice and got inside mine, When i slid i lost all control and ploughed into a snowdrift. Hmmm maybe i should listen better in future!

In more recent years, my little girl just stood in the garden in amazement with her arms outstretched, smiling and giggling at it. The best bit was going sledging and going zooming down the hill for ages until we were so cold we had to go back home and have some lovely warming hot chocolate! The other good thing was that if heavy snow was predicted we got sent home from school early and I remember us all standing in the playground and looking up at the sky hoping for a sign! 🙂

Taking my sons on the North Yorkshire moors in deep snow. My youngest son sank into a snow drift and shouted ‘the snow’s up to my privates!’. We all rolled and played in the snow and then went home to a big pan of chicken stew and a roaring fire – Brilliant day

My favourite snow memory is of my old labrador. .Sam…he LOVED the snow..from his first experience as a pup to a 17 year old senior….the one thing he could not fathom out is where the “ball” went! Throw him a snowball and he would spend ages looking for it 🙂

being completely snowed in at the village we used to live in, having to cook on the fire cause all the power was off and the kids couldn’t watch tv so played in the snow outside or interacted and played together, it was great going back to basics for a few days.

Many years ago we were coming home from the midlands to Leeds and we got caught in a snow storm and the roads were blocked we were diverted and eventually we got on to the M62 which was covered in snow and there was no other cars just us. It was like being in a film where the world has ended and you are the only ones left on earth – very errie and strange

We are very low down here in Bucks, so we hardly get any snow. However, we did a couple of years ago and it was quite deep, so we went sledging with these little bottom sledges. It was fantastic, and even though we got so cold and so wet it was amazing fun!

When I was six I got a pair of rollers skates for Christmas and I pleaded with my mum to take my to the local park to I could try them out except, the ground was covered with about four inches of snow. My mum, to her credit, indulged me and even though I only managed to skate a foot or so I really did have the best time.

Due to being up in the Highlands we can get a lot of snow at times, and when I was small we had a power cut on christmas day, rather than us being upset by it all. It was made more magical as we were by candle light (It was in the evening so we had our meal already lol)

I went to university in aberdeen – being from Cardiff where we hardly ever get snow I didnt quite understand how bad it can get – I got a train one morning to visit my friend in Dufftown – 4 hours later all the rail and roads were cut off due to snow and I was stranded there for 5 days – we had snowball fights, made snowangels, built snow people and had a blast although it was a tad difficult managing without clothes and things with me being large and her being little – I had to sleep naked whilst my clothes were washed and dried each day!

The first memory i have of snow was actually on a Christmas day. I was taken by my dad to the local recreation area, just a few minutes walk away. My mum was heavily pregnant with my sister so it was just the 2 of us and our black Labrador. My dad had a huge yellow sledge and i remember us both sitting in it and sledging down the hillside with the dog chasing after us and barking. Great memory and my parents have a picture of me and the dog on that very day on the wall in their lounge 🙂

I remember when I was about 10 and me and my brother built the most amazing igloo from buckets of snow carefully placed on top of each other (sandcastle style). Sadly we had no idea how to make a roof on it without it caving in until we thought of using a big piece of wood that my Dad had in the garden. Now all we needed was a door. Sadly we decided on our elder sisters new cream bedroom rug that we draped over the roof and allowed to hang down. Needless to say it was now more of a yellowy brown bedroom rug. Our sister was furious and mum was too but our lovely igloo still brings a smile to my face all these years later.

I remember my first winter living in Canada – now that really WAS snow ! The children had to be dressed in snowsuits and scarves so that just their eyes were showing otherwise they might get frost bite, the huge piles of snow left at the road edges by the plows each night, having to snowblow the drive so that you could get out onto the road and above all the fun and beauty of a white world

I had a really amazing night out with all my friends for a film showing, the film was made by a friend. While we’d been in the hotel an amazing 6 inches of beautiful snow had fallen and when it came to closing time in the bar everyone turned out for the most incredible snowball fight ever! There were around 30 people making up 3 different teams and it all took place in the most amazing location around Buxton park and Opera House! Really really good fun, and no getting cold as we all had beer jackets on!

Going back a long time for this one. It started snowing about midnight and my boyfriend and I went out in the street and had a snowball fight. Then the street lights clicked off and we were playing by the light of the snow. Thinking back we must have been mad (and young,,,lol) as we weren’t wearing proper clothing or shoes and it probably annoyed the neighbours but it was great fun 😀

One of my nicest memories concerning snow relates to my childhood. It was the late 60’s/early 70’s I must have been about 3. We lived in a block of flats and it was snowing. I think that this may have been the first time that I’d seen proper snow and I was enchanted by it. For some reason I couldn’t go outside to get a closer look but I remember my mother scooping some snow up from the window sills and putting it in a bowl for me to play with, as well as storing some in the fridge to keep me happy (and it did).

Simply :- Years ago when the family had two dogs. They seemed to love the snow, and would run around in it. If we made snowballs they would chase them, aiming to catch them. They seemed to have such fun, regardless of the depth of the snow. They were small dogs :- being Cairn Terriers. What lovely memories!

I originally come from Bosnia and we get snow up to our knees. I remember when I was 18, my sister and I went to visit my grandmother who lives on the farm which is set in the mountains. I will NEVER forget this because, as we were approaching my grandmother’s house (on foot) the snow was getting deeper and deeper. It was, believe or not, up to our waist and we were able to walk because people already made a little “lane” through it. Bosnia had the same two years ago
