The Importance of ‘Me’ Time.

1037355_53585515Whether it’s finding time to play your favourite games online or taking some time out to sit peacefully in the garden, it is vital that you get enough me time. In this article we look at why you need time to yourself and how you can get more.

Reasons people don’t have enough ‘Me’ Time

Many people today do not get a lot of time to themselves. We tend to live very busy lives that are dominated by external factors. One of the key areas of life that eats up me time is work. Having a job is important, of course, it allows a person to earn money so that they can support a family and live comfortably, as well as giving a person belonging and satisfaction.

However, the culture in which we live dictates that work is not simply a means to an end, it is the be all and end all. We are constantly encouraged to aspire to live lives beyond our means, and the only way we know how to achieve this aspirational ideal is to earn more money by working harder.

Another key factor behind a lack of me time is that a person may have a lot of responsibilities, such as looking after children, caring for elderly relatives or being a shoulder to cry on for friends. Meanwhile, at the bottom of their list of priorities is to look after their own needs.

Helping others is an important part of everyday life, however, it is vital that we sometimes put ourselves first because taking some precious time out for ‘me time’ is vital.

Why Me Time is so important

If you never get a moment to yourself you can end up feeling constantly irritable and tired. Me time allows you to unwind and recharge your batteries. It also allows you to process your thoughts and to put things in perspective.

If there’s something that you have been worrying about then spending time alone will allow you to sort through your subconscious and find an answer. This can help you to unburden yourself of the stresses and strain of everyday life.

You can help to ensure that you have enough me time by controlling the external factors that are currently getting in the way of you and yourself.

How to get more Me Time

Although many of us don’t get enough me time, it is pretty straightforward obtain. One really good way of increasing your ‘me time’ is to get yourself a hobby. This could be something brand new or an old hobby that has fallen by the wayside, as you have grown older.

If you find that you are really good at this activity it can be very rewarding; however, competence is not the key, the most important thing is that you enjoy your hobby and it gets you on your own. The best hobbies for increasing your ‘me time’ are those that are quite sedentary and peaceful, such as gardening or watching cricket.

I count myself very lucky that I do get me time now I work freelance at home and all of my kids are at school. I am definitely a happier, more relaxed person because of it. My poor husband is the one working himself into the ground. He works so hard that he doesn’t think anyone should have/ needs me time 🙁
