Prose for Thought – The Future

Prose for Thought – The Future

Welcome to this week’s Prose for Thought. I have to say that the weather has improved no end down here in Somerset and I was even in short sleeves yesterday (which is generally unheard of for me unless we have a heatwave!).

This weekend is my birthday and, every year, around this time I tend to go into reflective mode. Just for a while. Then I look forward to looking forward again! There are so many ‘what if’s’ and ‘maybes’ in the world that sometimes people forget to look at what they have right in front of their faces – and miss out on the here and now! I really do think that is a shame. I am afraid it is something that I have been guilty of myself.

The Future

Live your life for the future
It should be a happy dance
Looking at your life behind you
Should be no more than a glance
Our past, it’s true, it moulds us
Into who we have become
But there really is no use in holding on
Because what is done is done

Constantly looking behind you
Means you’ll miss the beautiful view
Of the horizon that’s before you
And all the people that love you
They try to capture your attention
They are growing all the while
All they want is to please you
And see a happy smile

Life it is too short
To live with hate and regret
And even though you move on
You never will forget
So use your memories fondly
Remember the happy times
Every so often they’ll be there
They will give you all the signs

There is sure to come a time
When they will leave your care
They will lead their own lives
With their own children to bear
Life deals you your hand
It’s up to you just how you play
Live life to it’s fullest
Enjoy each passing day

Loved this and came at right time for me. I find it so challenging to square missing how things were and having my parents around to how things are now where I have to be some sort of grown-up. Also resonated on new start in Hampshire after such a tough year. Thank you

Wise words my friend. This is really beautiful. Definitely your best yet. The words just flow. There is value in the past in the learning and the happy memories but the rest can just float away and your poem just conveys this in its easy rhythm and rhyme. Lovely x
