My Ultimate Summer Driving Playlist

When MoneySupermarket contacted me to let me know that they were asking bloggers to compile their ultimate summer driving playlist I knew this one was right up my street – if you’ll pardon the pun?! I drive…..A LOT and I LOVE music so I consider myself somewhat of an expert in this field!

Below I will list – in no particular order – the ten songs I would not hesitate to have blasting out of my car stereo on a fine summers day. Plus I would not be embarrassed whatsoever if I was sitting in a traffic jam and people could hear them…in fact I would expect them to bop along with me! With some I will just share the tune, others I will also give you the video (although it is advisable NOT to watch these when you are driving!!).

1. I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me – Nik Kershaw

I have loved this song since it first hit our airwaves way back in … I remember my Mum being astounded that I knew all the lyrics! Then, two years ago, Ross and I saw Nik Kershaw perform this at the Henley Rewind Festival at the most perfect defining moment – as the sun was setting! Ross recently interviewed Nik and spoke to him about this :). We are going again this year with VIP passes and hope to capture a similar moment this time around.

2. Rainbows – Beverley Craven

The perfect cheer up tune.  I always think of Grace when I hear this and feel happy.

3. Cult of Personality

As well as being my favourite wrestlers theme music (CM Punk for those of you who aren’t wrestling fans!) this is one fantastic head-banger of a tune. Full volume and air guitar essential (leave the air guitar if you are the driver!).

4. One Day Like This by Elbow

Again a full volume song for very different reasons. A complete and utter belter of a tune for the violins alone! I can just imagine the sunshine pouring in as you ‘throw those curtains wide”. Of course, you can always choose to sing Ross’ Lord of the Rings version of the chorus ‘Frodo’s curtains white’ !

5. 50 Ways to Say Goodbye by Train

Grace, Ross and I know ALL the words to this song. With a perfect Spanish guitar type of background it makes it very summery but it also has words which you can shout along to!

6. Somebody to Love by Queen

I could have chosen this over the standard Bohemian Rhapsody because this is probably my favourite Queen song aside from Save Me which is a bit slow and side for summer driving! It was also the song in the Pantomime I directed where Cinderella was about to go to the ball – the end of the first act.

17 Somebody to Love

7. Never Forget by Take That

A complete and utter TOON and another of my Pantomime songs – the very last one – a real feel good one. It really lifts my spirits when I hear this.

02 Never Forget

8. Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves

NO summer driving list should ever be compiled without this absolute corker of a summer song. I defy anyone not to love this one!

9. King of Wishful Thinking by Go West

Yep, my absolute favourite band EVER would never be missed off my list. This tune makes me think of the Lotus Esprit at the beginning of Pretty Woman and I always imagine I am driving one when I hear it….maybe one day, eh?! ;).

10. Mr Blue Sky by ELO

This…THIS…THIS tune people!! This is the one that EVERYONE should have on a summers day. I adore it, and yes, it was in my Pantomime!! The big show-stopping number which included the whole cast. I defy anyone not to at least sway to this and smile.

As a Qualified Driving Instructor, I would also like to remind you of the serious message behind this post too. THINK! research suggests that almost 20% of accidents on major roads are sleep or tiredness related. Long journeys on motorways can lead to a lack of concentration. There are lots of measures you can take to help you if you are driving long journeys such as opening a window, taking a break and having a cup of coffee as well as listening to your favourite tunes to stay focused. I recently drove a seven hour journey and as I got more and more tired I started to sing along (I warned Ross first!) but it worked – plus I had a great time in the process…not so sure about Ross’ eardrums though!

So, there you have it! My Ultimate Summer Driving Playlist thanks to MoneySupermarket. Right then…off for a drive now after compiling this lovely lot.

With thanks to for funding the very few tunes I didn’t already have downloaded on my ipod!

I knew you’d have some of my favourite 80’s classics in there – Queen, Go West, Nik Kershaw, Katrina and the Waves. I’ve just done this, clearly shows my age! Oh well. Great photo by the way 🙂

I love the Nik Kershaw song too, although I don’t think that particular one is my favourite! I think my friend and I thought we were his biggest fans, and my claim to fame would be that my parents banned me from seeing Nik in concert when I was 15 because they thought I might get attacked by other fans!!
I have just looked at this years rewind dates and they are the same week I am in Paris, so will have to make it a mission for next year!

    Great list though

Such great tunes. I would have Don’t stop me now by Queen. We walked up the aisle to this after our wedding!
