2 Super Kiwi Summer Smoothie Recipes

I was recently tasked with the challenge to invent a House of Fraser Smoothie, using any ingredients I wanted and I was told that I could interpret this in any way I wanted. So, have you heard of the Top Tenuous which Chris Evans features most mornings on his Radio 2 breakfast show? I have often sat and listened to Vassos reel off the callers and their dubious and obscure links to the subject matter. So, here is mine. How do I link a Kiwi fruit to House of Fraser?!

Well, my link isn’t quite as groan-inducing as you might think (unlike the ones on Radio 2) and, it is pretty interesting actually.  Kiwi fruits are actually native to China and only got given the name when a New Zealand teacher introduced the Actinidia deliciosa (their scientific name) from China to her homeland in 1904 after returning from a visit to a Chinese mission to a place called Yichang, situated on the Yangtze River. Returning to New Zealand, she brought with her some seeds of what was then called Chinese, or Ichang, gooseberry, and from these a local nurseryman produced plants that first fruited in 1910. And what was the name of the teacher? Mary Isabel Fraser. Hence the Fraser connection!

I decided to come up with not one, but 2 great – and very tasty – Kiwi fruit smoothie recipes. Both of them are easy to make and ready in moments! All you need is one smoothie maker – such as the Kenwood Smoothie To Go and various types of fruit which are detailed in the recipes together with some milk – whether this be dairy or non.

Kiwi and Lime Smoothie

Kiwi and Lime Smoothie by Victoria Welton

2 kiwi fruit
Half an avocado
The juice of half a lime
2 or 3 tsps of honey (enough to taste)
2 to 3 ice cubes
1 cup of milk or enough to just cover the fruit (I used Oat Milk as dairy free alternative)

Peel and chop the kiwi fruit and avocado.
Place in the smoothie maker and add the lime juice and honey and cover with milk, then add the ice cubes.
Blend and serve.
