I have to admit that I am not a big lover of Pearl Jam. I find many of their songs sound a bit out of tune to me. There are only two songs of theirs to date that I really like. One called ‘The End’ but my favourite has to be ‘Just Breathe’ from their album ‘Backspacer’.
This was actually number 1 in my 100 a couple of years ago (see a previous Song for the Weekend for what this means). It had been in Ross’ list and I can remember hearing it as we travelled to Portland in Dorset one day. Even now I call the roundabout where I first heard it the ‘Pearl Jam roundabout’! Because I had remembered it, I decided to listen to it again to decide whether or not it should go into my list and, at the time, it really struck a chord with me. It gave me goosebumps and I always know a good song if it makes me cry. It was summing up my feelings on how I just want everything in life to be simple and straightforward. To just breathe and stop sweating the small stuff. The lyrics at the end of the song are ‘Hold me ’til I die, Meet you on the other side…’ and they stop it perfectly. As though it is not over and there is an afterlife (which I do believe in). The other thing I love is when the bass guitar kicks in during the second verse. That, and the strings which build it perfectly.
It still rates very highly in my top 10 at the moment and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
