A Better, Brighter Me – My Health and Fitness Plan Week 1

IMG_0135So, how have I faired after the first week of my health and fitness plan on the road to a better, brighter me?

I have to say that I haven’t found it too bad at all. I was so ready for this change so it means that I am embracing it for what it is and doing all I can to feel better about me and life in general.

I started using the Epson Pulsense-100 and it’s findings are really interesting. Not only does it measure your steps and exercise, it measures the calories you burn, your sleep pattern (both deep and light sleep) and how your mind is fairing (both elevated and relaxed). On top of all of that, it measures your heart rate (both resting and elevated). At the moment I am still getting to grips with using it but I intend to include all my stats in next weeks write-up.

My Diet.

This week I have been following the Reboot with Joe 15 Day Reboot Plan – although I am doing 10 to fit in with the next diet which starts on Monday. All I have eaten is vegan. No dairy, wheat, gluten or meat. I haven’t even had any pulses. All I have drunk is water and herbal tea. As the week went on, I graduated away from food and am currently on smoothies, juices and soups – all of which remain vegan. I have to say that I believe that I have started this in the right way. With the little food I have had, next week’s paleo diet is going to be a real treat for me!

Foods which weren’t for me

I still have a love/hate relationship with celery. I can’t stand it raw in salads but I am more than happy to disguise it in a juice, smoothie or soup!

Foods I loved

All of my vegetable soups which were blended were a real hit for me. I was also surprised to find myself loving the raw carrot soup. I was tempted to heat it in the microwave but I found it to be spicy and warming whilst being cold at the same time!

My Exercise

I have started the year as I mean to go on. Ross and I made an agreement that every day this year he will do push-up and I will do squats. We started on 1st January and we have kept it up every day. I started on 10 and am now at 20. I intend to increase that next week. I hadn’t really done much else – that is until I started at the 1610 gym in Crewkerne on Wednesday (2 months free courtesy of the people at Epson). My first class was Body Pump. I found it pretty hard – especially with my shoulder still causing me issues – but the instructor, Andrew, was really helpful and guided me through the exercises with alternatives to allow for my shoulder where necessary. Then, last night, I went to the session for Abs. This was even harder but once again my instructor, Mark, was very supportive and gave me alternative exercises. My quads are killing me – but in a good way! I have to say that I did come away with my shoulder feeling extremely painful so I am glad I am off to see my sports therapist this morning.

We also have a workout area in our garage. I constructed an exercise bike last weekend (which was a workout in itself!) and we also have a treadmill and weights. I am making a start with the bike this weekend and will be using both treadmill and bike to build up my cardio activity. I also intend to get better with walking to school in the mornings!

General Wellbeing

I was sent a great new vitamin developed by Seven Seas. Perfect7 has a unique blend of marine oils, rich in Omega-3, and key vitamins and minerals and been formulated with 7 key benefits in mind. There are two distinct formulations for both women and men.  Perfect7 Woman includes Vitamin B6 to help regulate hormonal activity, as well as Zinc which contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and nails. I started to take it last Sunday and am already feeling a difference. I also started the first round of my homeopathy tablets last Sunday – 2 a day for 3 days. I have to do the same at the same time next month.

I have felt SO much better as the health kick has gone on. My hair and skin feel and look better. I feel like I have perked up a bit. Tuesday I actually felt myself smiling for no apparent reason apart from the fact that I was happy with my life (despite the day including my impending tax return!). Last Saturday night saw the first time in a long time that I got a full 9 hours sleep!

Weigh-in

Finally, how did my weight fair? Well, I have to say that I am very pleased with the strong start! Although I am realistic enough to realise that the first week always holds the biggest loss for me.

Weight on 15th January 2015: 187.0lbs

Weight on 23rd January 2015: 181.0lbs

Total Loss: 6.0lbs

    WOW 6lb is an amazing loss! You really have it all organised there lady, I have a Fitbit one to track everything, my sleep tracking is pretty depressing at the moment though haha! xx

    Sounds like it has been a fantastic week! I really need to look into a tracker with a heart rate monitor – will check out the Epson!

    I hate celery, in anything, never liked it no matter how much I have tried to enjoy it. You are certainly braver than I am, I need meat in my diet, along with bread otherwise I become very cranky. Look forward to your updates!

    Oh wow, that’s an impressive start, congrats. I’m vegetarian but not sure that I could ever make the move to vegan, I’d miss eggs and cheese too much. #pocolo

    Well done – what a great start, and good that you’re being realistic too. I’m easing my way into the year, focussing more on doing regular walks than pushing too hard on the diet front (I’ve always been a terrible dieter). Keep up the good work!

    Yay for health and fitness! Hats off to you for sticking to that vegan diet, i would have found that really hard, but it looks like it’s made a big difference to your energy levels which is great.

    Way to go! I started well on my healthy living last summer and then it stalled. I really need to get back on it as I’m tired of not fitting into my clothes. Keep up the good work hun!!!

    Congratulations hunny that’s amazing. You are doing so great! I really need to start eating right and doing exercise. It’s something I keep saying and never do.     Well done for sticking to such a strict diet. The effort must have been huge! We are eating very low carb and exercising more and it is paying off. Great that Ross is supporting you with his push ups. What a great start to 2015 #pocolo xxx
