NaPoWriMo Day 21 – What’s Behind The Photograph?

Today’s NaPoWriMo inspiration comes from a wonderful post that has linked up to this weeks Post Comment Love. Entry number 46 from Galina Varese and her blog Chez Maximka which is all about her collection of old photographs plus, of course, today is Silent Sunday which runs every week. Photographs are what provide us with so many memories and we are lucky these days that social media means that we can connect with who belongs to which photo. My Mum has a collection of old photographs belonging to my Grandad and my worry is that, as time passes, people in these photos will become just faces and not people. My poem reflects this.

What’s Behind The Photograph?

What’s behind the photograph?

The one I’m holding here

In days that have already gone

The dreams of yesteryear

What’s behind the photograph?

This one that I find

These people all had lives

Another place, another time

What’s behind the photograph?

The people I’ve not seen

Did they have a happy life?

Be all they could have been

What’s behind the photograph?

Will there come a day

In the future when I’m gone

Is that what they will say?

Photos are so intriguing, aren’t they? Our local flea market often has boxes of them, from the houses of people who’ve died. Like you, I often wonder what the story is behind them…

Love this Vicky xx I find photos fascinating. They tell such a story don’t they? Like you, I worry that as our grandparents and parents disappear the ability to name people disappears and they just become faces that we are somehow related to. It makes me think I need to find all the remaining people in my family, get them over for a drink and put some names to all those faces :0)
